"Magic Hill". Evgeniya Lotsmanova

In Kolomna, from June 16 to July 22, at the cultural center "House of Ozerov," the first personal exhibition of 27-year-old illustrator, graduate of the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Moscow University of Printing Evgenia Lotsmanova is taking place. I apologize in advance for the poor quality photographs - drawings hang under glass. I found illustrations on the Internet.

The exhibition presents illustrations to the fairy tales of H.K. Andersen, A.N. Tolstoy, S. Pisakhov and K. Lewis. The artist herself can best tell about her work, so below I will give an interview that Evgenia gave to the correspondent of Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

How did it happen that you devoted yourself to such a heavy masculine technique as lithography? Evgeniya Lotsmanova: Lithography allows you to experiment with the same sketch, varying colors and refining it in search of the best solution. And there is a charm in the miraculousness of the printed picture, which usually turns out a little bit different from what you expect.

You called your exhibition a journey. Where are we going? Evgeniya Lotsmanova: We will go on a journey through fairy tales created by writers from different countries. They carry both a bright national flavor and the spirit of the time when they were created. Russian, European or Oriental tales require a different approach, different artistic landmarks, be it Russian popular print and painted spinning wheels, Iranian miniatures or European painting of the 16th-19th centuries.

Your heroes are fabulous - you will not find such people in life. Where do they come from? From dreams, from childhood? .. Evgenia Lotsmanova: Yes, mainly from childhood impressions and some vague, but very dear associations ... I draw some heroes from the closest people. For example, from mom.

What books did you like and enjoy reading? Evgenia Lotsmanova: As a child, I loved fairy tales and stories about animals. Later I read a lot of classics and adventure literature like The Three Musketeers. One of my favorite books now is "The Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov. I always enjoy reading memoirs, books written in exile, memoirs of people who lived through the most difficult moments of our history. One of the last read - the memoirs of the artist Ostroumova-Lebedeva.

When did you feel like an illustrator? Evgeniya Lotsmanova: It all started with a wonderful picture drawn by my mother for the "City of Masters". She did so well that I wanted to draw as well.

Your exhibition is a whole fabulous country. What would you call this country? Evgenia Lotsmanova: I remember the words of Nika Georgievna Golts, one of my favorite illustrators, said at a meeting with us students. She said: no fictional countries are needed, because all the most interesting and magical things happen nearby, you just need to see it.

They say that your ancestors were icon painters? What do you know about them and do you feel in yourself, in your art, some kind of generic continuity? Evgenia Lotsmanova: Unfortunately, I don't know much. My maternal great-grandfather came from the village of Yegoryevsky district, where icon painting flourished. In his youth, great-grandfather continued family traditions, but after the revolution he had to change his occupation. Probably, both icon painting and book illustration are types of art that do not allow too much fuss, including labor that is rather painstaking, requiring "deep immersion" and intense mental work.

Who are your favorite artists? Evgenia Lotsmanova: I love Flemish and Dutch painting, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rembrandt, Hals, Vermeer. I am happy to appeal to many masters of European painting up to the end of the 19th century. In Russian art, I really love Korovin, Kustodiev, Vrubel, all the "world of art". I am in awe of Benois's ABC and Bilibin's books. And of course, my great and endless joy is the masters of Soviet book graphics, whose pictures have been dearly loved since childhood: Konashevich, Yuri Vasnetsov, Mavrina, Ustinov, Eliseev, Golts and many, many others. And I especially want to say about the illustrations by my dear teacher Boris Arkadyevich Diodorov, which became a real inspiration for me already at the institute.

You write poetry, do singing, make dolls ... Evgenia Lotsmanova: I only manage a small part of what I want to do. But different hobbies, I feel, feed each other. Singing Russian folk songs inspires pictures for Russian fairy tales, if there is no time to draw an image that suddenly appeared, you can write a poem about it somewhere on the road, and creating dolls, working with volume, with different textures and materials makes it easier to sculpt the shape in the drawing.

It is often said that children are indifferent to books, to reading, that the book will soon die. What would you say to such skeptics? Evgenia Lotsmanova: With the help of computer technology, information can be obtained, but most likely it will be kaleidoscopic. The book, on the other hand, is capable of carrying a holistic artistic image that will educate the child's taste, being an understandable, cozy and tangible house for words and characters living and acting in it, like actors in a play played for one small spectator and for his closest people.

We are sometimes reproached: you have only reprints, and now no one wants to publish contemporary young artists. To be honest, it's a shame to read this: our publishing house publishes quite a lot of such books (a lot, considering that we are a small private publishing house). The books are different, something is a tribute to the experiment, something is simpler. Over the past couple of years, we have published books with illustrations: Victoria Kirdiy, Ksenia Lavrova, Galina Zinko, Olga Fadeeva, Lina Eitmantite-Valuzhene, Elena Bazanova, Liza Bukhalova, Olga Ionaitis, Galina Lavrenko, Lyudmila Pipchenko, Ekaterina Plaksina, Polina. If anyone missed something - you are welcome to study on the site.
Perhaps this feeling arises because I rarely talk about these books in this LJ, but this is from a series of one-sided information :) - our St. Petersburg edition works with these books, this is their specialization, and I just usually "do not know".

We are now actively working with new series "Image of Speech". According to our plan, this series will include books by contemporary artists, both recognized masters and very young; both completely new projects and redesigned by the artist specifically for this series. This is how "Nevsky Prospekt" with Mikhail Bychkov, "Journey to Tandadrika" and "About What Cannot Be" with Igor Oleinikov, "The Hedgehog Goes to School" with Evgeny Antonenkov have already appeared.
We are currently preparing two books: "Girl-candle" by Yulia Gukova and "Magic Hill" by Evgeniya Lotsmanova.

For the young artist Evgenia Lotsmanova, this will be only the second published book.
the first was this one (I think many people noticed it)

So, a rare tale by G.Kh. Andersen "Magic Hill".
The illustrations are based on the artist's diploma work, but significantly revised for this edition.
Drawings in a rare today technique - lithography.

These are just illustrations for now, outside the layout.
I don't know anything else, this is a book of our St. Petersburg edition, closer to the release the information will be on the site.

Well, you can read a little about the artist here.

"Fairy forest"

January 30 in the Cultural Center "House of Ozerov" opening of the exhibition of book graphics "Fairy Forest" by illustrator Evgeniya Lotsmanova... The exhibition is based on illustrations to the fairy tale "The Magic Hill" by H. K. Andersen. For the young artist Evgenia Lotsmanova, "The Magic Hill" is the second published book with her illustrations that simply "revived" this fairy tale and cannot but cause admiration.

The illustrations in this fabulous book are based on the artist's diploma work, but significantly revised for this edition. Having “leafed” the pages of this book on the screen and listened to the summary of the tale, everyone who came to the opening probably wanted to read this early work of the Danish storyteller and realized how much an illustrator meant for the book. Drawings of the book were made in a technique that is rare today, which is considered to be "heavy male technique" - lithography. From the short film, which Yevgenia Lotsmanova herself commented, everyone could learn about the laborious process of creating a lithograph.

Evgenia was asked a lot of questions. Answering them in detail, the young artist charmed everyone with her answers. According to Evgenia, each painting is a reflection of the author's soul, a little childish and naive; it is an internal dialogue with the viewer, an invitation to return to the wonderful world of childhood.

That evening, Evgenia received congratulations from the director of the Children's Art School named after the People's Artist of Russia M.G. Abakumov Vasily Alekseevich Beck, because Evgenia is a graduate of this school. There were many kind words and memories from the teacher of this school, Nadezhda Alexandrovna Semyonova. Kolomna artist Gennady Mitrofanovich Savinov expressed the hope that Evgenia would return to Kolomna more than once and surprise its inhabitants with her creativity, because the illustration of a children's book for her is akin to breathing - it is impossible to live without it. In addition, the artist and ethnographer Alexei Alekseevich Fedorov suggested that Evgenia devote the following works to Kolomna , having illustrated the famous work of I. I. Lazhechnikov "White, black and gray". Evgenia herself especially thanked her mother, Natalya Nikolaevna, who is her creative and spiritual inspiration.

Elegant illustrations by Evgenia Lotsmanova allowed everyone who came to the opening day to plunge into the wonderful world of book illustration. Together with the author, the audience visited the "Fairy Forest", created by a wonderful artist, illustrator Evgenia Lotsmanova.

The exhibition "Fairy Forest" by Evgeniya Lotsmanova will be a real gift for Koloment residents and guests of our city. From it, each of us will be able to draw those emotions and feelings that remained on the pages of beautiful fairy tales that once generously adorned our childhood.

"The illustrator is his own director, set designer and actor. I live the life of my characters, convey the character. The art of book illustration is very akin to theater, sometimes you want the characters to jump out of the book and start talking."

Lotsmanova Evgeniya

Evgeniya Lotsmanova(b. 1989) - a young Moscow artist, a graduate of the graphic arts department of the Moscow University of Printing Arts.

Evgenia was born and studied in Kolomna, attended art school. She began to draw from early childhood. She was very fond of portraying fairy-tale characters, small animals, which are very often found in Russian folk tales. In 2002 she entered the Moscow State University of Printing Arts at the Faculty of Book Graphics, so the hobby became a profession. All her works are made in the best traditions of the Russian school of illustration. Now Evgenia lives in Moscow.

The artist began to work on the creation of drawings for "The Forty Tales" a long time ago, back in 2004, but the result appeared only eight years later. This is due to the choice of the execution technique, a very complex and time-consuming lithography. To create one picture, according to Evgenia Lotsmanova herself, it takes her from one to several months. (Lithography - writing, sketching and artistic drawing on a stone with ink and pencil of a special composition, as well as scratching with a needle, followed by printing prints on paper.)

Here is what Evgenia herself says about her work on "The Magpie Tales":

"I love Tolstoy's fairy tales since childhood. He has a very juicy Russian language. It's great to feel that time, village life with huts, walking geese in the yard, with horses, a threshing floor, a well. I wanted to show it all. And lithography is a very unusual technique - it's interesting to create one sketch and then varying the color in different ways. It's a fun artistic process that produces different effects. "
