How to allow access to a computer from a local network? How to connect remote access to a computer via the Internet Setting up remote computer control.

Technical support for users of your own software product, administration and control of the corporate network - all this requires remote control of the client's computer. And the field of software products for remote access is not empty: the tools are provided both by the Windows 7 operating system itself and by numerous third-party programs. Built-in tools are good for their accessibility, third-party ones - for an intuitively simple interface, "sharpened" for ordinary users. Having analyzed the principles of operation, the pros and cons of each method, you will be fully equipped, and the network and users will be under control.

Windows 7 Remote Desktop Setup

Remote Desktop is available in Windows 7 Premium Edition and above. You will need it if you need to work with it on computers where Windows 7 Home Edition (the cheapest) is installed, provide support for multiple remote desktops - to connect to multiple computers at the same time - or change the port address used by the RDP service. This will require non-trivial settings that can be made to the system using the registry editor or third-party programs. But it's better to spend a little of your time than a large amount of money to buy a new operating system.

Remote desktop port

The RDP service, the functions of which ensure the operability of the remote desktop, uses port number 3389 as a standard. The probability of hacker attacks on this port is very high, so you can change the port number to increase the level of network security. Since there are no settings in the "Control Panel" for this, you will have to use the system registry editor.

  1. From the command line, launch the registry editor with system administrator rights.

Launching the Registry Editor to Change the RDP Port Address

  2. In the editor window, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber. The list of registry branch variables will be displayed on the right side of the window.

The necessary variable is hidden deep in the bowels of the system registry

  3. From the context menu, select "Edit" and enter a new port address, after making sure that the value entry mode is decimal.

Switch the system to decimal and enter a new value for the port address

  4. Now, in order to connect to a computer, you will need to enter not its name on the network, but an address with a port number, for example, 175.243.11.12:3421.

Changing the port address from the default 3389 to a custom port will prevent the Remote Assistance service from working on computers running Windows XP. Take this into account if there are any on your network.

Remote Desktop in Windows 7 Home Premium with support for multiple remote desktops

To encourage users to spend more money, Microsoft has severely limited the capabilities of the remote desktop service depending on the OS version. For example, in “Home Extended” and below, the ability to connect remotely is not available at all, and in any other, the number of sessions is limited to one, that is, you cannot connect remotely to two or more computers at the same time. The manufacturer believes that for this you should purchase a server version of the system of a special edition (Terminal Edition).

Fortunately, caring enthusiasts have worked to resolve this difficult problem. The result of their efforts is the RDP Wrapper Library software package. Once installed, it is introduced as an intermediary between the Remote Desktop Service (RDP) and the Service Manager, after which it deceives them by emulating the presence of Windows Server Terminal Edition on the network and enabling the RDP service on Windows 7 Home computers.

The program is available for download from the author's page and is completely free. After downloading and running the installer, all settings are made automatically, including making changes to the firewall rules.

RDP Wrapper Library - installation is automatic

The included RDPConf.exe utility will allow you to enable or disable remote access on the fly, change the number of simultaneous access sessions and the RDP service access port number.

Using Rdpwrapper, you can configure remote access settings

How to allow or deny remote access

All options for allowing or denying remote access to a computer are located in the "Computer Properties" section of the control panel. You can enable or disable remote control in just a few steps. Don't forget that you must be logged in with an account with administrator rights to make these changes.

  1. Use the Win+Pause key combination to open the system properties window.

Win + Pause keys will help to enable "System Properties"

  2. In the left column of additional actions, click on the link "Remote access settings".
  3. The following control settings are available in the dialog box that opens:
  4. It should be noted that for remote control to be possible, the user account opening such a session must have administrator rights. To enable remote control of a regular user, you should add his name to the list of permissions, which can be accessed using the "Select Users" button.

If the user to whom you want to grant remote access does not have administrator rights, you can add it in this dialog box

Remote Desktop Connection

Connecting to a remote desktop is very simple. Naturally, before that, you need to enable all the necessary permissions on the client machine and create a list of users on it who will be allowed remote control.

  1. Call the standard command line dialog and run the mstsc.exe utility with it.

Calling the Remote Desktop Client Program

  2. On the General tab, enter the name of the computer to connect to in the upper column of the dialog box, and the username in the lower column (if necessary, a name that differs from the one under which you logged in). Remember that the user account must have administrator rights.

Entering the computer name on the network for remote control

  3. In the "Interaction" tab, select the planned connection speed based on the capabilities of your network. If you find it difficult to choose the settings, leave automatic. The system will test the channel speed and select the optimal values.

Choose the channel speed based on the capabilities of your network

  4. If everything is done correctly, and remote access is allowed on the client machine, you will see a window for entering a username and password. Enter the username and password of the client machine.
  5. After clicking the "Connect" button, a window with the desktop of the remote PC will appear. It can be expanded to full screen and create a complete illusion of working on a client machine.

Avoid working in high resolution video modes: this will create a large load on the network, and the remote PC interface will be jerky. The ideal option is a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels and a color depth of 16 bits.

What to do if Remote Desktop is not working

Problems connecting to a remote computer can be caused by many reasons. Among the most common are the following:

  • on the client machine, the permissions for access to the remote desktop and remote assistant are not enabled in the settings;

Make sure that the settings allow remote access to the PC

  • the account with which you are trying to remote access does not have administrator rights;

Make sure your account has admin rights

  • your computer and the client computer are not in the same workgroup or domain on the local network;

Slave and master must be members of the same workgroup

  • the router of the local network used by both computers blocks port 3389, through which Windows 7 remote control services communicate;

Turning on the firewall in the router without additional configuration blocks most ports

  • outgoing requests from Remote Desktop Services are blocked by the antivirus package.

Remote Desktop Service may be blacklisted by an antivirus package

remoteapp is disabled

A message about disabling remote access is often waiting for the user when trying to connect to it, and a dialog box also appears, which can confuse an inexperienced user.

Licensing service error will not allow you to start a remote desktop session

Meanwhile, everything is very simple: the rights of the user who tries to "raise" the remote desktop session are not enough to change the registry key responsible for licensing. The error is corrected in two stages.

Why does remote desktop slow down?

The uninterrupted operation of a remote desktop session requires a high-speed channel, the lion's share of which is eaten by the transmission of the remote desktop image itself. Depending on the working resolution on the client machine, the traffic can be so dense that it will “put down” a mid-office 100-megabit local network. But in the network, in addition to two communicating PCs, there are also clients. To prevent network collapse, the remote access program starts to reduce the number of transmitted frames (frames) per second.

If at 60 frames per second you see a smooth, smooth picture, then at 30 frames per second the interface will be displayed with noticeable jerks. Lowering the screen refresh rate further will make the job unbearable: you won't even be able to accurately position the mouse cursor on interface elements. To prevent this from happening, you should optimize both the network connections of the slave and master computers, and the screen settings of the client computer.

  1. If possible, use a gigabit network router to distribute Wi-Fi.

Using a modern router is the key to high speed remote access

  2. Connect computers on the network only with an Ethernet cable, the WiFi interface does not support high screen refresh rates, despite the theoretically high speed (150-300 Mbps).

Use a cable connection if you want to avoid remote access delays

  3. On the client computer, set the screen resolution to at least 1024x768 with 16-bit color gamut.
  4. Disable download managers, torrent clients and other similar traffic consuming programs on the master and slave computers.

A remote desktop control session and a running torrent client are bad neighbors

Remote access to Windows 7 components

In addition to managing the remote desktop by emulating the operation of the keyboard and mouse of a client computer, Windows 7 remote access tools also allow you to remotely launch programs and system commands from the command line interface, manage the system registry and firewall (firewall), and restart or turn off the slave PC . It requires less network and system resources than Remote Desktop Control and can be done invisibly to the user working on the computer.

Remote command line

For the needs of system administrators, Microsoft has developed a special service utility. Interacting with the remote access services of the operating system, it allows you to access the command line interface of any computer on the local network, run programs on it, and even remotely install programs before they start. The utility is called PsExec and is available for free download from the official Microsoft website as part of the PSTools package.

Download the utility from the server, run the installer executable file on the computer that will be used for management, and, having agreed with the text of the license agreement, carry out the installation.

Install the PSExec utility

Now you can call the utility from the command line and use the full range of its wide features.

Let's take a closer look at the syntax of the command and its additional launch options: psexec [\\computer[,computer2[,…] | @file][-u user [-p password]][-n s][-l][-s|-e][-x][-i [session]][-c [-f|-v]] [-w directory][-d][-<приоритет>][-a n,n,… ] program [arguments].

Table: psexec command launch parameters

Examples of the PSEXEC utility

The procedure for working with the PsExec utility is as follows:

  1. Launch another computer's command prompt with psexec \\<сетевое имя компьютера>cmd.exe.
  2. Open any program on the remote computer. If the program does not exist on the slave PC, it will be copied from the admin machine. To do this, type psexec \\<сетевое имя компьютера>-c test.exe, where test.exe is the program to be executed remotely.
  3. If the program you want to remotely execute is not in the system folder, specify its full path when running the psexec command \\<сетевое имя компьютера>-c c:\program files\external_test.exe

Remote registry

In order to be able to remotely edit the registry, you must first activate the appropriate services on the client computer. This is easy to do if the account has administrator rights. To do this, launch the Service Manager snap-in from a command prompt window and select the Remote Registry service from the list in the main window. Press the "Start" button on the top control panel.

The Remote Registry service must be running both on the client PCs and on the administrator's PC.

Now you can connect to the registry of a computer on your local network remotely.

The registry branch of the remote PC will be displayed in the registry editor window and you can edit it just as easily as your local registry.

Remote firewall management

Unfortunately, there is no convenient graphical tool for remote control of the firewall. Therefore, all manipulations will have to be performed using the command line. First, you need to connect to the remote PC using the Telnet service. If the Telnet client is not installed, it must be added via Add/Remove Windows Components.

Now you need to establish a communication session with a remote computer via the telnet protocol.

Once the session is established, you can remotely control the firewall of the remote computer using the netsh command. The following commands will be available to you:

    query firewall rules. You can find out the Windows Firewall configuration on a remote PC using the netsh advfirewall firewall show rule name=all command;

    enable or disable the firewall with the commands "netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state on" and "netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off";

    return to default settings with the netsh advfirewall reset command;

    opening a port is perhaps the most common task that will need to be performed. For example, you can open port 2117 for a torrent client to work like this: netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Utorrent rule" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=1433;

    allow incoming and outgoing requests to an arbitrary program using netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Allow Miner" dir=in action=allow program="C:\Bitcoin\miner.exe";

enable remote administration using the Windows console: netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group= "remote administration" new enable=yes.

After completing the necessary settings, do not forget to close the Telnet session with the quit command.

Remote reboot

The standard OS shutdown command allows you to turn off or restart any computer on the local network if it has permissions for remote assistance and remote desktop. From a command prompt window, type shutdown / /m \\computername /c "comment" and press Enter.

Remote Access (RD) in Windows XP - 10 is the ability to connect to any computer connected to the global network if the remote connection is configured correctly on both machines. The use of UD is necessary in cases of providing various services for maintaining user computers by system administrators, support workers or ordinary users who need help from acquaintances. Today we will consider this concept in more detail and learn how to connect to any computer connected to the network to perform certain actions on it.

Remote access to a PC based on Windows XP is organized using a pre-installed utility - Remote Desktop or Remote Desktop. And here such details as the provider, the type of network used, the hardware configuration and the physical location of the computer are completely unimportant. The main thing is access to the network. Wireless Internet is enough for remote access.

Remote Desktop is an indispensable feature for people working on different machines, storing different data on each of them. To run it, you just need to open the program on each computer with Windows XP or 10, connect to another and log in with your own login and management information.

Remote access is implemented through RDP - Remote Access Protocol. Microsoft borrowed this technology, which is now common to various computer and mobile platforms, from one of the acquired companies. Features of RDP for XP:

  • support for 32-bit color depth;
  • encryption of information with a 128-bit key with checking the hashes of transmitted packets;
  • transferring sound from computer to computer;
  • work with remote and local printers;
  • open access for applications to parallel, local and serial ports;
  • data exchange via buffer.

The latest version of RDP, positioned as the 7th, has the following features:

  • form-based authentication of entered data during pre-desktop connection;
  • works only with applications that use a certificate from a trusted developer;
  • virtual desktop connectivity through an enhanced host for virtualization;
  • desktop management through an intermediary;
  • an updated protection mechanism, the correct configuration of which will provide a reliable connection without loss and the possibility of data interception;
  • bidirectional data transfer from computer to computer;
  • working with multiple monitors in Windows XP;
  • transmission of high-quality video with elements of Flash and Silverlight, if the setting for support for these features is enabled.

In addition to having a program for remote access via the RDP protocol, the following conditions must be met: using Windows XP Professional and having an account with a password, which excludes unauthorized access to the PC.

Remote access settings on XP are carried out for several minutes, after connection it is possible to gain full control and perform remote control of the computer.

We create an account with a complex password, from which we will manage the PC.

For added security, create a restricted account to minimize damage to the system during a successful unauthorized access attempt.

  • We go to the "Control Panel" and click on "Accounts ..".
  • Select the item responsible for creating a new user account.

  • Specify an account name and click Next.

  • Specify the user's permissions and click the central button.

  • Click "Change Account".

  • Select the one you just created and click "Create Password".

  • Enter the password twice and click "Create ...".

Consider how to establish a connection with a computer under Windows XP.

  • We call "Properties" of the "My Computer" directory and go to "Remote Sessions".
  • We allow remote access and click "Select remote users".

  • Add users and click OK.

To connect to a computer with Windows XP, perform the following steps.

  • We launch the application, as in the screenshot.

  • We set the following data: the name of the PC to which you are connecting, and the account that has permission to do so.

  • Click "Connect".
  • In the next window, set the password and click "OK".

  • We are waiting for the authentication to complete and get to work.

Consider the differences between RDP Windows 10 and XP.

Making an RDP connection involves managing one Windows 10 computer over another located on the same subnet. To connect via RDP, you need to know the IP of the target device. It is easy to recognize it by going to the "Control Panel" of Windows 10. Next, we go to the center that manages networks. In the section with an active connection, click on the connection icon. In the window that appears, click "Details".

A window will open from which you can get information about IP.

Setting up a connection to the desktop in Windows 10 is carried out in the system properties window.

  • We call the context menu "My Computer" and go to the "Remote Access" tab in Windows 10.
  • We set the parameters as in the screenshot, save them and restart Windows 10.

To establish access to a PC on your home network, enter "Connect to remote" in the search engine.

Run the utility.

Enter the IP of the target computer managed by Windows 10.

Click Connect. After a few seconds, you will have to go through authorization and wait for the desktop of the target PC, after which you can work on the remote machine as on your own.

In order to connect to a PC located anywhere in the world and take it under your temporary control, use one of the following freely distributed utilities: Radmin, TeamViewer or Ammy Admin.

Connecting to the desktop via RDP in any of them is carried out by methods similar to those discussed in the article, so we will not describe the programs in detail.

(Visited 9 334 times, 5 visits today)

There are a lot of programs for organizing remote access. There are paid and free programs, there are programs for different operating systems. It is clear that in this article we will not be able to consider everything at once, but we will talk about the most interesting of them, and most importantly, we will understand what is more effective for a particular task.

Radmin (shareware)

About ten years ago, Radmin was the most popular remote access program, and it still exists (www.radmin.ru) - it has not gone anywhere during this time. Let's start the review with it.

The program consists of two parts: Server and Viewer. The first one runs on the remote computer(s) and the second one runs on your computer and is used to connect to the remote machines you are about to configure. On the developer's website, you can download both the complete set and individual components. There is also a portable version of the Viewer that works without installation, and the version of Radmin Server 3.5 NTI is a special version without a tray icon, that is, a user of a remote computer will not know that Radmin is installed on it until you start managing his computer.

I will note the key features: support for Windows 8 32/64 bit, support for switching user sessions in Windows XP/Vista/7/8, compatibility with Wine (Radmin can organize remote access to a Linux PC via Wine), Telnet support, remote PC shutdown , Radmin server scanner (allows you to find all the PCs you can manage on your network), file transfer between Server and Viewer.

Conclusions:

  • The functionality of the program: here is its own authentication, and support for voice chat, and the ability to transfer files. Everything is very convenient.
  • Due to the fact that Server is installed on the remote computer, the presence of the user is not required, as in other similar programs. For example, you can administer remote PCs of your colleagues when they are out for lunch. Other similar programs require either the user to allow the connection, or the user to provide you with a password that is automatically generated each time you connect.
  • Low system requirements, the program does not load the processor at all, which is especially important for my old laptop with an AMD processor, which heats up like an iron - it acted as a "remote" computer.
  • Just starting the Server is not enough, you also need to configure it.
  • Many users love TeamViewer not for its functionality, but for the fact that it doesn't require any special ports (it uses port 80 by default) and doesn't require firewall configuration. Radmin Server uses port 4899, and it will not be possible to start it without configuring a firewall.
  • No mobile clients.
  • Does not support other OS.

TeamViewer (freeware)

Now, probably, from the programs for remote access, TeamViewer is the most popular of all. You can download the full version from www.teamviewer.com/ru and don't pay a dime. The program is absolutely free for non-commercial use.

Rice. 4. TeamViewer launched

TeamViewer pleases with support for Windows, OS X, Linux, which was so lacking in Radmin. There are also mobile clients for Android, iPad/iPhone: you can control a remote computer from your iPhone. There is also a Portable version of the program for Windows, which is very useful for infrequent use of the program, and the Portable version can be run both on the “server” and on the “client”, unlike Radmin, where you can only run the client (Viewer) without installation, and the "server" part must be installed.

After starting the program, you will see the main TeamViewer window and the Computers and Contacts window (Fig. 4). If you plan to help all your relatives and colleagues at once, you can click the "Register" button, create an account, and then in this window you will see all the numerous computers that you set up.

Rice. 5. TeamViewer in action

Now let's figure out which is which. If you need to connect to your computer, then you must tell the remote party your ID (in this case, 969 930 547) and password (8229). How to report, decide for yourself - you can copy and transfer these values via Skype, ICQ, email, SMS, or simply dictate by phone. This password changes each time the program is started. If the program is installed on your computer, you can make a permanent personal password, but I do not recommend: the password can be compromised and then anyone can connect to your computer.

If you need to connect to a remote computer, then you need to enter the ID of the remote side (in this case, 411108007) and click the "Connect to partner" button, after which the program will ask you to enter the password that you received from the remote side. That's all - in the window that appears, you can configure the remote computer (Fig. 5).

You probably already noticed the main difference from Radmin: you need to transfer the password to the person who sets up the computer, and in Radmin the password is specified when creating a user account. In other words, you need the presence of the user at the computer. The question is, how to organize a home office when you want to access your work computer from home, for example, at night. Everything is very simple. You need to organize TeamViewer autostart (for example, add it to the Startup group or register it in the registry in the Run key) and set a Personal Password. Please note that you cannot set a personal password if the program is not installed on your computer, but is launched without installation.

There is one more program you should be aware of: TeamViewer Host. It runs as a system service and is used for 24/7 access to a remote computer, including logging in/out. It turns out that TeamViewer Host allows you to organize a terminal server, and it supports an unlimited number of clients for one server (the number of clients is limited only by the computing capabilities of your computer). It should also be noted that to install TeamViewer Host, you need administrator rights, which are not always available, so in most cases you will still use the regular TeamViewer. However, if you need to set up only one computer (or simply organize remote access to it, say from home), then TeamViewer Host is not needed. For the sake of justice, it should be noted that if a regular TeamViewer (not Host) is running on computer A, then computers B, C, D (the number three is given as an example) can connect to it for joint administration. Another thing is that you need to coordinate the actions of administrators, since the keyboard and mouse are common, but one can configure, the rest will observe.

Like Radmin, TeamViewer allows you to exchange files, voice and text messages, as well as remotely reboot the computer (the desired command is in the "Actions" menu, see Fig. 5, just restarting the computer is not enough - after all, then the TeamViewer communication session will not be established, reboot computer during its setup is only needed through the "Actions" menu).

Conclusions:

  • Simplicity (the program is simpler than Radmin - a huge advantage for inexperienced users who will have to install it on the remote side).
  • The program completely does not require installation: both on the client and on the server. Installation is optional.
  • Works on port 80 (and some additional ports) so no firewall configuration is required.
  • Availability of versions for other operating systems.
  • Availability of mobile clients for Android, iOS and Windows Phone 8 (that is, you can control a remote computer directly from your iPad).
  • Possibility of organizing interactive conferences (up to 25 participants).
  • Does not require administrator rights for remote access.
  • The processor loads noticeably more than Radmin, my old laptop even overheated and turned off.
  • Although there are mobile clients, they are not very convenient (however, this is better than nothing).

Royal TS (shareware)

Once upon a time there was such a program - mRemote. I don’t know what happened there, but the mRemote project was closed, and the developers took it and created another project - Royal TS. On the site you will find versions for Windows, OS X and iOS (can be run from iPhone and iPad).

In Royal TS, before creating a connection, you need to create a document, that is, one connection = one document. Royal TS documents are a very handy thing, they can be transferred like regular files, for example, to another admin. He will be able to open such a document and immediately connect to a remote computer without having to create a connection manually. The shareware version has a limit on the number of simultaneously open documents - ten. As for me, this is quite enough for non-commercial use of the program, so in practice you won’t even notice that you are missing something (unless, of course, you administer a huge network of computers remotely).

The first thing to say is that this program is fundamentally different from Radmin and TeamViewer. Both of these programs combine the functionality of both a server and a client (in the case of Radmin, the server and client are different programs, in the case of TeamViewer they are the same program). In other words, on one of the computers you can install Radmin Server or TeamViewer, and on the other, use Radmin Viewer or TeamViewer, respectively, to connect to this remote computer. So, Royal TS is something like Radmin Viewer, that is, a program for connecting to a remote server, but the server will have to be created on its own. How you do it is your problem. Royal TS will not help you create such a server, but will only allow you to connect to it.

Rice. 6. Royal TS for Windows

Among the protocols for connecting to a remote server that Royal TS supports: RDP, Telnet, SSH, Citrix, VNC. The RDP / Telnet / SSH servers themselves and others will have to be configured independently.

On the one hand, this is beyond the scope of the article, on the other hand, it would be incomplete if I did not give an example of setting up at least one of the servers that Royal TS supports. SSH / Telnet servers, I think, the reader will not be very interested. I want something graphic. Suppose we have Linux (Ubuntu or its clone) and we need to set up a VNC server. To do this, first install the VNC server with the command:

sudo apt-get install vnc4server

After that, you need to run it - for the first time without parameters:

sudo vnc4server

When running the sudo vnc4server command, you need to enter the password that will be used to connect to this VNC server. The password itself will be stored in $HOME/.vnc/passwd. I won't say a word more - there is man :). After the first launch, you need to start vnc4server by specifying the screen number:

sudo vnc4server:3

Next, in Royal TS, you need to create a new document (on the File tab), then go to the Edit tab and press the VNC button. In the window that appears (Fig. 7), you need to enter the display name (Display Name) - in our case: 3, the IP address of the VNC server and specify the port number (usually 5900). The password will be requested when connecting to the server.

Rice. 7. VNC Connection Options

Conclusions:

  • A universal client for connecting to a remote server using various protocols.
  • There are versions for Windows, OS X and iOS.
  • It is impossible to organize remote access using only Royal TS tools, additional programs are needed.
  • Not suitable for remote configuration of computers of inexperienced users - they simply will not be able to configure the necessary remote access services.

Supremo: free and easy (freeware)

Let's analyze the situation. If you don't like TeamViewer or you can't use it for some reason (including the need to purchase a license for commercial use), and Radmin is also not suitable for any reason, then you will have to look for analogues. Since the article deals with simple and free programs, it is necessary that the following program be: a) free; b) simple. This is the Supremo program, which can be downloaded from the site.

The program (Fig. 8) was created "in the image and likeness" of TeamViewer. It does not require installation, its principle of operation is the same as that of TeamViewer, even it uses the same terminology (this is me regarding the partner ID and other inscriptions in the program interface).

The computer you are setting up and the support technician's computer must be running Windows only. Various editions of Windows are supported, including Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Nothing has been said about support for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 on the official website yet.

Rice. 8. Supremo program

The algorithm for using it is simple: you need to run the program on both computers, then ask the remote party for its ID and password, and then click the "Connect" button. Before this, the remote side must press the "Start" button, otherwise the connection will not be allowed. Perhaps this is the only difference from TeamViewer.

To make the review more complete, let's go to the program settings (Tools -> Options). In the "Security" section (Fig. 9), you can configure the automatic launch of the program, specify a password for remote connections, and specify which IDs are allowed to connect to your computer.

Rice. 9. Supremo security options

In the "Connection" section (Fig. 10), you can specify the proxy server settings if it is present on your network.

Rice. 10. Supremo connection parameters

In addition to its direct purpose, namely remote control of a computer, the program can be used to exchange files. For file sharing (which is possible in two directions - both download and upload) just use drag & drop.

Conclusions:

  • Easy to use.
  • Does not require installation.
  • Ability to transfer files.
  • Chat capability.
  • No firewall configuration required (using HTTPS/SSL).
  • No support for OS other than Windows.
  • No mobile clients.

LogMeIn (freeware)

Consider another useful program - LogMeIn (Fig. 11). The purpose of this program is the same as that of all the others discussed in this article - remote access. On the logmein.com website you will find several similar products, but we are primarily interested in the LogMeIn Free product. Its capabilities are quite sufficient for most purposes: access to a computer running Windows or OS X, remote control and desktop viewing, copy and paste data between computers, reboot function, chat, support for multiple monitors, intrusion detection via SSL / TLS protocol, not requires firewall settings, does not require administrator rights on the remote computer.

Personally, I liked the functions of copying and pasting data between computers, as well as the reboot function: in the process of setting up a computer, it sometimes needs to be rebooted, after which the remote access session will be automatically restored, which is very convenient.

Unlike the Free version, the Pro version supports PC-to-PC file transfer, HD video, PC-to-PC drag and drop, and a few other features that are hardly worth paying nearly 53 euros a year for, which is what the Pro version costs. A comparison of the two versions, as well as the OS X version, can be read at: https://secure.logmein.com/comparisonchart/comparisonFPP.aspx.

Rice. 11. LogMeIn Main Window

The way you work with this program is slightly different from TeamViewer and similar programs. It's a little more complicated, but apparently that's how the LogMeIn developers determine who uses the program and for what purposes. In the main window, select "from a Mac or PC" and then you will see the sequence of actions that you need to perform in order to give another user access to this computer (Fig. 12). Grandpa and grandma will definitely get confused and not appreciated. You can’t do without registering on logmein.com, although it is free, it is completely unnecessary in terms of convenience.

Rice. 12. How to connect to this PC

There is, however, a simpler way - anonymous access through a browser. Quite an interesting feature, which is not found in other similar programs. The bottom line is this: a user who wants you to set up his computer creates an invitation link, then sends it to you in any convenient way (via email, Skype, and so on). The invitation link is valid for a certain time (the time is set by the remote user), even if someone peeps the link, he is unlikely to be able to use it after the expiration date.

Let's take a look at how to create an invitation and how to use it. The Desktop Sharing section displays the current prompts. By clicking the "Send invitation" button, you can generate the same link. The Create Invitation Wizard allows you to define the length of the invitation and how the invitation should be sent (you can email the link, or you can just get the link and send it manually).

Rice. 13. Manage a remote computer through a browser

Then this link must be sent to the person who will be setting up the computer. When he copies it to the browser and opens it, he will see a screen similar to the one in fig. 13. To continue, you need to click the "Continue" button. After that, the user who sent the link will receive two requests in sequence. The first request is a request to allow access to the guest, the second request is to grant access rights (Fig. 20). The guest can either fully control the computer, or only view the desktop without control.

Conclusions:

  • Does not require administrator rights.
  • Does not require firewall configuration.
  • Ability to use a browser for remote control.
  • mobile clients.
  • A somewhat unusual way of working.

Mosh (mobile shell): a good alternative for SSH

Mosh can also be used for remote access to the console (that is, you can remotely execute commands and see their result). The main advantage of Mosh over SSH is the ability to roam, that is, change the network on the client machine, which is useful on the road when the network can change (now it is cellular, in a few minutes it is Wi-Fi, while the IP changes, but the connection remains). Frequently traveling admins will appreciate this. But there is one big drawback: Mosh will not connect to a regular SSH server, which means that Mosh will have to be installed on the server. But Mosh does not work as a daemon, like SSH, but as a regular program, that is, root access is not needed to run it. Mosh is available for many Linux and BSD distributions, OS X, iOS (as part of the popular iSSH client), and Android.

UltraVNC/RealVNC

VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is a system for remote access to a computer desktop using the RFB (Remote FrameBuffer) protocol. It was previously shown how to organize a VNC server on Linux; on Windows, such a server can be created using the UltraVNC or RealVNC programs. The UltraVNC program is similar to RealVNC, but has additional features such as encryption of the connection between the client and the server, the Java Viewer module (access to a remote PC through a Java-enabled browser), and others. Although RealVNC has a VNC Viewer plugin for Google Chrome so there is no need for a Java Viewer. As already noted, the programs are largely similar, so in this article we will only consider UltraVNC.

When installing UltraVNC, it is possible to install both a VNC server and a VNC client. On your computer, if you do not need remote access to it, you can not install the VNC server. When installing the VNC server, it will be possible to configure it to run as a system service, but this requires admin rights. The RFB protocol that VNC uses usually uses ports 5900-5906. Therefore, to connect via VNC, you need to configure a firewall, otherwise it will "kill" the connection.

The UltraVNC Viewer program is used to connect to the VNC server. The program is universal and you can use it to connect to any VNC server, not just the one running UltraVNC Server. Similarly, you can connect to a server created by the UltraVNC Server program with the RoyalTS program or any other VNC client.

A few words about how it all works. First, launch the UltraVNC Edit Settings program and on the Security tab set a password to access the VNC server, then you need to launch the UltraVNC Server program. After that, on another computer, we launch UltraVNC Viewer (Fig. 14) and enter the IP of the computer on which the VNC server is installed, and click the Connect button.

Rice. 14. UltraVNC Viewer

Conclusions:

  • You need admin rights, you need to configure the firewall.
  • The same protocol can be used to control Windows, OS X and Linux, but these are not the advantages of a specific program, but of VNC itself.

SSH access

SSH remains a classic of remote access. It would seem, what else can you think of? Well, for example, what if you have a lot of remote machines? Prescribe aliases for each? There are special utilities that allow you to quickly switch between machines. One such manager in Linux is Gnome Connection Manager. The program is very convenient, highly recommended. Windows uses AutoPuTTY for this purpose, a wrapper for the popular PuTTY SSH/Telnet client, which can be downloaded from http://www.r4dius.net/autoputty/. There is a similar SSH connection manager for OS X -Shuttle . For mobile platforms, you can use mobile SSH clients - Prompt (iOS) and ConnectBot (Android). You can easily find links and screenshots on the Web.

Ammyy Admin (freeware)

Ammyy Admin is another program for remote desktop access. The program is good because it is absolutely free, it is not demanding on resources at all (the executable file generally takes a ridiculous 700 Kb), it allows you to organize both regular remote access to the desktop and a connection in the style of a remote office, it does not require installing and changing firewall settings. You can find the rest of the program's features on the developers' website.

AnywhereTS (freeware)

Allows you to convert computers into thin clients. The main purpose of this program is by no means remote access for reasons of technical support, as in all previously described programs, although it can also be used for this. AnywareTS allows you to give a second life to old computers that will be used as thin clients - connect to a server that will run programs that are physically impossible to run on old PCs. Detailed information about this program can be found on the developer's website.

Remote access in Windows 8

This review would not be complete if we did not consider the capabilities of the OS itself. On the "server" (that is, on the computer to which remote access is planned), you need to perform the following steps:

  • Run SystemPropertiesRemote.exe.
  • Enable the "Allow remote assistance connections to this computer" checkbox.
  • Turn on the "Allow remote connections to this computer" switch and click the "Apply" button.
  • If you use power saving mode, you need to configure the computer so that it never goes into sleep mode.

On your computer, use the Remote Desktop Connection application to connect to a remote computer.

Rice. 15. Remote access permission

Google Hangouts: Screen Sharing and Video Conferencing

As a last resort, you can use the new service from Google - Hangouts. It allows you to arrange video calls, during which users can share their screen with each other. If you wish, you can familiarize yourself with this service.

Instead of a conclusion

There are a lot of programs for remote access. As I hope I have shown, the most familiar tool is not always the most effective. It is necessary to build on the conditions of a specific task, target platforms and other factors. I hope now I have finally cleared up the whole picture of remote access in your head. All suggestions and wishes can be sent to [email protected].

From time to time, all categories of users need a remote connection to a particular computer. Today we will look at several methods for performing this operation.

Basically, the solution of the task set today is provided by specialized software, both paid and free. In some cases, the toolkit built into Windows may come in handy. Consider all possible options in order.

Method 1: TeamViewer

TeamViewer is a free (for non-commercial use) tool that provides the user with a complete set of functions for remote administration. In addition, with the help of this program, you can set up remote access to your computer in a few clicks. But before connecting, you will need to download the program, and this will need to be done not only on our PC, but also on the one to which we will connect.

  1. Run the executable after downloading. Three options are available - use with installation; install only the client part and use without installation. If the program is running on a computer that you plan to manage remotely, you can select the second option "Install so that you can control this computer remotely later". In this case, TeamViewer will install the connection module. If the launch is planned on a PC from which other devices will be controlled, both the first and third options will do. Also suitable for single use "Personal/non-commercial use". After setting the desired options, press "Accept - Complete".
  2. Next, the main window of the program will be opened, where we will be interested in two fields - "Your ID" And "Password". This data will be used to connect to the computer.
  3. As soon as the program is launched on the client computer, you can start connecting. For this in the field Partner ID you must enter the corresponding number (ID) and press the button "Connect to partner". Then the program will ask you to enter a password (displayed in the field "Password"). Next, a connection to the remote PC will be established.
  4. Once the connection is established, the desktop of the machine will appear.
  5. TeamWeaver is one of the most popular and convenient solutions for remote work. The picture is spoiled only by rare connection bugs.

Method 2: TightVNC

Another option for connecting to a PC remotely is to use the TightVNC application, which is also capable of solving the task set today.

  1. Download the installation package of the program and install it on both target computers. In the process, you will be prompted to set passwords for connecting and accessing administrative options - we recommend that you set both.
  2. After installing the components, we proceed to the application configuration. The first step is to configure the server part, that is, the one that is installed on the computer to which we will connect. Find the application icon in the system tray, right-click on it and select the option "Configuration".
  3. First of all, check if all the items on the tab are checked Server– these options are responsible for the connection performance.

Advanced users also do not hurt to visit the section access control, in which you can specify the range of IP addresses from which the connection to this computer will be made. Click the button Add, then type an address or pool of addresses in the dialog box, then click OK.

  4. Next, you need to find out the IP address of the server machine. You can find out how to do this in the article at the link below.

  5. To connect, open the TightVNC Viewer program on the client machine - you can do this through the application folder in the menu "Start".
  6. In field "Remote Host" enter the destination PC address.

In addition to IP, in some cases it may also be necessary to additionally enter the connection port if a value other than the default is used. In this case, the input scheme changes somewhat - IP and port are entered through a colon:

    *address*:*port*

Both values should be written without asterisks.

  7. Check the correctness of the input of the required data, then press connect. If a password has been set for the connection, you will need to enter it.
  8. Wait until the connection is established. If everything is done correctly, you will see the desktop of the remote computer, which you can already work with.
  9. As you can see, nothing complicated - TightVNC is very easy to manage and configure, and besides, it is completely free.

Method 3: Litemanager

Another application through which you can organize a remote connection to another computer is Litemanager.

  1. Unlike the previous solution, Lightmanager has separate installers for server and client versions. Start the installation from the first - move the file Litemanager Pro– Server to the machine you want to connect to and start it. In the process, a window will appear with confirmation of the automatic configuration of the Windows firewall - make sure that the desired checkbox is checked.

At the end of the installation, you will be prompted to set a password for the connection, as well as allow the connection using an ID. The latter resembles a similar solution for TeamViewer.

  2. Now you should install the client version on the main computer. This procedure does not imply any specific nuances and is performed in the same way as in the case of any other Windows application.
  3. To establish a connection, make sure that the Litemanager server is running on the target machine. By default, it is disabled - you can run the application through the file of the same name in the program folder in the menu "Start".

After starting the server, you will need to configure it. To do this, open the system tray, find the Litemanager icon, right-click on it and select the option "Settings for LM Server".

Click on the button "Server Settings" and select an option "Safety".

  4. To start the server, use the tray icon again, but this time just left-click on it. A small window will appear with the ID value, remember it or write it down. You can also set a PIN here to protect against unwanted connections. Click connect to start the server.
  5. The client version can be launched from a shortcut on the "Desktop". In the application window, double-click on the element with the left mouse button "Add new connection".

In the pop-up window, enter the ID and PIN value, if you set one in the previous step, and click "OK".

You will be prompted to enter the password specified in the server settings in the previous step.

  6. Using the menu "Modes", located on the right side of the client manager, select the desired connection option - for example, "View", then double left click on the connected connection.

Now you can view the contents of the screen of the remote computer.

  7. Lightmanager is a slightly more complex solution than those discussed above, but it provides good security settings and general functionality for working with a remote machine.

Method 4: AnyDesk

An excellent alternative to all the previously mentioned programs is AnyDesk. You don't even need to install it on your computer to use it.

Method 5: System Tool

In Windows 7 and above, Microsoft has built in a tool to remotely access other machines on the same local network. Its use is carried out in two stages - configuration and actual connection.

Setting
First, let's set up the computer to which we will connect. The process is to set a static IP for this machine and enable the remote access feature.

  1. Take advantage "Search" to find and discover "Control Panel".
  2. Switch icon display to "Large", then open the item "Network and Sharing Center».
  3. Find the link that corresponds to the Internet connection adapter and click on it with the left mouse button.
  4. Next, open "Intelligence".

Copy values from positions "IPv4 address", "Default Gateway", "DNS servers", we will need them for the next step.
  5. close "Intelligence" and click on the button "Properties".

Find an item in the list "Internet Protocol Network v4", highlight it and click "Properties".
  6. Switch to manual address entry and enter the values obtained in the connection details in the previous step in the appropriate fields.
  7. Now you need to enable the remote access feature. On Windows 10 you need to open "Options"(the most convenient combination Win+I), then select "System".

In the system settings we find the item "Remote Desktop" and activate the switch.

You will need to confirm the operation.

  8. On Windows 7 and older, open "Control Panel", points "System""Setting up remote access" and check the box "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop...".

Remote connection
After all the preparations, you can proceed to the installation of the connection.

Conclusion

We looked at several ways to remotely connect to another computer. Finally, we want to remind you - be careful using the proposed solutions, since there is a risk of losing personal information.

Remote desktop software, more accurately referred to as remote access software or remote control software, allows you to remotely control one computer from another. By remote control, we really meant remote control - you can take your mouse and keyboard and use the computer you're connected to just like your own.

Remote desktop software is really useful for a lot of situations, from helping your dad who lives 500 miles away work through a computer problem, to remotely managing from your New York office the dozens of servers you run in a Singapore data center!

Generally, remote access to a computer requires a piece of software to be installed on the computer you wish to connect to, called host. Once this is done, another computer or device with the correct credentials, called client, can connect to the host and control it.

Don't let the technical aspects of remote desktop software put you off. The best free remote access programs listed below take no more than a few clicks to get started—no special computer knowledge is required.

Note. Remote Desktop is also the actual name of the built-in remote access tool in Windows operating systems. It is rated along with other tools, but we believe there are several remote control programs out there that do a better job.

Remote access programs:

teamviewer

TeamViewer is the best free remote access software I have ever used. There are loads of features that are always great but also very easy to install. No changes to the router or firewall configurations are required.

With support for video, voice calls, and text chat, TeamViewer also allows you to transfer files, supports Wake-on-LAN (WOL), can remotely monitor the screen of an iPhone or iPad user, and even remotely reboot the PC in safe mode and then reconnect automatically.

Host side

The computer you want to connect with TeamViewer can be a Windows, Mac or Linux computer.

Full installable version teamviewer is one of the options here and is probably a safe bet if you're not sure what to do. portable version called TeamViewer QuickSupport, is an excellent choice if the computer you want to remotely control will only need to be used once, or if installing software on it is not possible. The third option is TeamViewer Host is the best choice if you will be connecting to this computer regularly.

Client side

TeamViewer has several options for connecting to the computer you want to control.

Installable and portable programs are available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as mobile apps for iOS, BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Phone. Yes - this means you can use your phone or tablet to connect to your remote-controlled computers on the go.

TeamViewer also allows you to use a web browser to access your computer remotely.

A number of other features are also included, such as the ability to share a single application window with someone else (instead of the entire desktop), and the ability to print remote files to a local printer.

I suggest trying TeamViewer before any other program on this list.

The full list of supported desktop operating systems for TeamViewer includes Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2000, Windows Server 2012/2008/2003, Windows Home Server, Mac, Linux and Chrome OS.

Ammyy Admin

Ammyy Admin is a free, fast and easy way to get a remote access and remote desktop solution for both individuals and businesses. Unlike powerful remote desktop software, the tool comes as a tiny 1MB app. In addition to remotely connecting to another system, you can also perform actions such as file transfer and chat. Supported by Windows, secure connection and easy software management make Ammyy Adminn one of the most preferred free remote desktop clients.

While it's free for non-commercial purposes, the Starter, Premium, and Corporate licensed tools are priced at $33.90, $66.90, and $99.90, respectively.

AnyDesk is a remote desktop program that can be portable or installed like a regular program.

Host side

Launch AnyDesk on the PC you want to connect to and record AnyDesk-Address, or a custom alias if configured.

When a client connects, the host will be prompted to allow or deny the connection, as well as manage permissions, such as allowing audio, the clipboard, and the ability to block host keyboard/mouse control.

Client side

On another computer, launch AnyDesk, and then enter the AnyDesk host address or alias in the " remote table" on the screen.

If automatic access is configured in the settings, the client does not need to wait for the host to accept the connection.

AnyDesk auto-updates and can enter full screen mode, balance connection quality and speed, transfer files and audio, sync clipboard, record remote session, launch keyboard shortcuts, take screenshots of remote computer, and restart host computer.

AnyDesk works with Windows (10 to XP), MacOS and Linux.

AeroAdmin is perhaps the most simple program for free remote access. There are virtually no settings, and everything is fast and accurate, which is ideal for spontaneous support.

Host side

AeroAdmin is very similar to the TeamViewer program that tops this list. Just open the portable program and share your IP address or given ID with someone else. This is how the client computer will know how to connect to the host.

Client side

The client PC just needs to launch the same AeroAdmin program and enter the ID or IP address into its program. Before connecting, you can select " View only" or " Remote control" and then just select " To plug" to request a remote control.

When the host computer acknowledges the connection, you can begin to control the computer, exchange clipboard text, and transfer files.

It's great that AeroAdmin is completely free for both personal and commercial use, but it's too bad that it doesn't include a chat option.

Another note to make is that while AeroAdmin is 100% free, it does limit the number of hours you can use per month.

AeroAdmin can be installed on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10, 8, 7, and XP.

Remote PC

Pros: Simple, simple interface with a flat learning curve. Fast performance. Easily transfer files between local and remote desktops. Inexpensive.

Minuses: Cannot display more than one remote monitor in the same window.

RemotePC is one of the best remote access apps, offering identical features on computers and Macs, high performance, and a minimal yet intuitive interface.

Remote Utilities is a free remote access program with some really great features. It works by linking two remote computers together with what they call an "Internet ID". You can control a total of 10 PCs with Remote Utilities.

Host side

Install the remote utilities part called " Host on a Windows PC" to have permanent access to it. You also have the option to run agent, which provides spontaneous support without installing anything - you can even run it from a flash drive.

The host computer is given an Internet ID that they must use in order for the client to establish a connection.

Client side

Program Viewer used to connect to host or agent software.

The viewer can be loaded by itself or in a combo file Viewer + Host. You can also download the portable Viewer if you don't want to install anything.

Connecting the viewer to a host or agent is done without any changes to the router, such as port forwarding, which simplifies setup. The customer just needs to enter the identification number and password on the Internet.

There are also client apps that can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android users.

Various modules can be used with the viewer so that you can access your computer remotely without even viewing the screen, although screen viewing is definitely the main feature of Remote Utilities.

Some of the Remote Utilities modules are: Remote Task Manager, File Transfer, Power Management for Remote Reboot or WOL, Remote Terminal (command line access), Remote File Run, System Information Manager, Text Chat, Remote Registry Access, and Remote View webcams.

In addition to these features, Remote Utilities also supports remote printing and multi-monitor viewing.

Unfortunately, setting up Remote Utilities can be confusing on the host computer, as there are many different options.

Remote Utilities can be installed on Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP as well as Windows Server 2012, 2008 and 2003.

Another remote access program is UltraVNC. UltraVNC works a bit like Remote Utilities, where server And viewer installed on two PCs and the viewer is used to manage the server.

Host side

When you install UltraVNC you are asked if you want to install server , Viewer or both. Install the server on the PC you want to connect to.

You can install UltraVNC Server as a system service so that it is always running. This is ideal, so you can always connect to it using the client software.

Client side

To establish a connection to an UltraVNC server, you must install the Viewer part during setup.

After setting up port forwarding on your router, you can access the UltraVNC server from anywhere using an internet connection, either through a mobile device that supports VNC connections, or a PC with a viewer installed, or an internet browser. All you need is the server's IP address to establish a connection.

UltraVNC supports file transfer, text chat, clipboard sharing, and can even boot and connect to a server in secure mode.

The download page is a bit confusing - select the most recent version of UltraVNC first, and then select the 32-bit or 64-bit installer that will work with your version of Windows.

Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP and Windows Server 2012, 2008 and 2003 users can install and use UltraVNC.

Windows Remote Desktop

Windows Remote Desktop is remote access software built into the Windows operating system. No additional download is required to use the program.

Host side

To enable connection to a computer using Windows Remote Desktop, you must open the settings system properties(accessible using the control panel) and allow remote connections through a specific Windows user through the " Remote ».

You really must configure the router to forward ports so another computer can connect to it from the network side, but this is usually not much of a hassle to complete.

Client side

Another computer that wants to connect to the main computer should simply open the already installed software to connect to remote desktop and enter the host's IP address.

Advice. You can open Remote Desktop in the Run dialog box (open it with the shortcut Windows Key + R); just type Mstsc command to run it.

Most of the other programs on this list have features that Windows Remote Desktop doesn't, but this remote access method seems like the most natural and easiest way to control the mouse and keyboard of a remote Windows PC.

Once everything is set up, you can transfer files, print to a local printer, listen to audio from a remote PC, and transfer clipboard contents.

Remote Desktop Availability

Windows Remote Desktop can be used on Windows from XP to Windows 10.

However, while all versions of Windows can connect to other computers with incoming connections enabled, not all versions of Windows can act as a host (i.e., accept incoming remote access requests).

If you are using version Home Premium or lower, your computer can only act as a client and therefore cannot be deleted remotely (but it can access other computers remotely).

Inbound remote access is only allowed for professional, corporate And final versions of Windows. In these editions, others may be removed to the computer as described above.

Something else to remember is that Remote Desktop will disconnect the user if they are logged in when someone connects to that user's account remotely. This is very different from any other program on this list - everyone else can remotely connect to the user's account while the user is still actively using the computer.

Chrome Remote Desktop is an extension for the Google Chrome browser that allows you to set up your computer for remote access from any other computer running Google Chrome.

Host side

The way this works is that you install an extension on Google Chrome and then grant authorization to access that PC remotely with a personal PIN that you create yourself.

To do this, you need to sign into your Google account, such as your Gmail or YouTube account information.

Client side

To connect to the host browser, sign in to Chrome Remote Desktop using a different web browser (it must be Chrome) using the same Google credentials or using a temporary access code generated by the host computer.

Since you are logged in, you can easily see a different PC name from where you can simply select it and start a remote session.

Chrome Remote Desktop (copy and paste only) doesn't have the file sharing or chat features you see in similar programs, but it's very easy to set up and allows you to connect to your computer (or anyone) from anywhere using just your web browser.

What's more, you can remotely work on the computer when the user isn't opening Chrome, or even when they're completely logged out of the user's account.

Because Chrome Remote Desktop runs entirely within the Google Chrome browser, it can work with any operating system that uses Chrome, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks.

seecreen.com

Seecreen (formerly called Firnass) is an extremely tiny (500 KB) but powerful freeware remote access program that's perfect for instant on-demand support.

Host side

Open the program on the computer you want to monitor. After creating an account and logging in, you can add other users to the menu by their email address or username.

Adding a client to the No Participation section allows them to have automatic access to the computer.

Client side

To connect to the host computer using Seecreen, another user needs to enter the host ID and password.

Screen sharing must be initiated from the client computer.

Seecreen does not support clipboard synchronization.

Seecreen is a JAR file that uses Java to run. All versions of Windows are supported, as well as Mac and Linux operating systems

LiteManager is another remote access program, and it's strikingly similar to the one we're talking about above.

However, unlike Remote Utilities, which can only control 10 PCs, LiteManager supports up to 30 slots for storage and connection to remote computers, and has many useful features.

Host side

The computer to be accessed must install the program LiteManager ProServer.msi(it's free) contained in the downloaded ZIP file.

There are many ways to provide a connection to a host computer. This can be done using an IP address, computer name, or ID.

The easiest way to set this up is to right-click the server program in the taskbar notification area, select , erase content that already exists, and click Connected» to create a new ID.

Client side

Another program called Viewer is installed to connect the client to the host. After the host computer has issued an identifier, the client must enter it from the " Connect by ID" on the menu " Compound", to establish a remote connection with another computer.

Once connected, the client can perform all kinds of actions, for example, using Remote Utilities, such as working with multiple monitors, transferring files in the background, gaining full control or read-only access on another PC, launching a remote task manager, launching files and programs remotely , record sound, edit the registry, create demos, lock another person's screen and keyboard, and text chat.

There is also a QuickSupport option, which is a portable program for servers and viewers that makes the connection much faster than the above method.

I tested LiteManager on Windows 10, but it should also work fine on Windows 8, 7, Vista and XP. This program is also available for macOS.

Comodo Unite is another free remote access program that creates a secure VPN connection between multiple computers. Once the VPN is established, you can remotely access applications and files through the client software.

Host side

Install the Comodo Unite software on the computer you want to monitor and then create an account with Comodo Unite. An account is how you keep track of the PCs you add to your account, so it's easy to connect.

Client side

To connect to the Comodo Unite host machine, simply install the same software and then log in with the same username and password. You can then simply select the computer you want to monitor and start a VPN session right away.

Files can only be shared if you start a chat, so it's not as easy to share files with Comodo Unite as it is with other remote desktop software on this list. However, the chat is secure in a VPN that you can't find in similar software.

Only Windows 7, Vista, and XP (32-bit and 64-bit) are officially supported, but I was able to get Comodo Unite to function the same as it does on Windows 10 and Windows 8.

Note. Comodo Unite has been replaced by Comodo ONE, but it's still available for download and is more suitable for most people.

ShowMyPC is a portable and free remote access program that is almost identical to UltraVNC (number 3 on this list), but uses a password to connect instead of an IP address.

Host side

Launch the ShowMyPC program on any computer, and then select " Show my computer", to get a unique identification number called common password .

Client side

Open the same ShowMyPC program on another computer and enter the ID from the main program to establish a connection. Instead, the customer can enter the number on the ShowMyPC website (in the Browse PC field) and run the Java version of the program in their browser.

There are additional options here that are not available in UltraVNC, such as using a webcam via a web browser and scheduled meetings that allow someone to connect to your PC via a personal web link that launches the Java version of ShowMyPC.

ShowMyPC clients can only send a limited number of keyboard shortcuts to the host computer.

Select ShowMyPC Free on the download page to get the free version. It works on all versions of Windows.

join.me is a remote access program from the manufacturers of LogMeIn that provides quick access to another computer through an Internet browser.

Host side

A person who needs remote assistance can download and run the join.me software, which allows the entire computer or just a selected application to be displayed to the remote viewer. This is done by choosing launch buttons.

Client side

The remote viewer simply needs to enter the join.me personal code into their own installation in the section connections .

join.me supports full screen, conferencing, text chat, multiple monitors, and allows you to view up to 10 participants at the same time.

The client can instead visit the join.me home page to enter the code for the host computer without having to download any software. The code must be entered in the "CONNECT MEETING" field.

All Windows versions can install join.me as well as Mac.

Note. Download join.me for free using the small download link below the paid options.

RD Tabs

The built-in Windows Remote Desktop Connection utility is a bit basic; it offers multiple options, and multiple connections fill up the taskbar, making it hard to navigate between desktops. If you regularly access multiple remote computers or just want to improve your remote desktop client, check out the RD tabs from Avian Waves. It uses a tabbed interface to manage open remote connections with familiar functionality similar to existing browsers, keeping everything in one place. But it offers much more than just better organization, with additional features like password encryption, remote terminal server management, connection thumbnails, and command line scripts.

DesktopNow is a free remote access program from NCH Software. After optionally forwarding the correct port number in the router and registering a free account, you can access your computer from anywhere via a web browser.

Host side

To access a computer remotely, the DesktopNow software must be installed.

When the program is launched for the first time, an email address and password must be entered so that you can use the same credentials on the client side to establish a connection.

The host computer can either configure its router to forward the proper port number to itself, or opt for cloud access during installation to make a direct connection to the client, bypassing the need for complex forwarding.

It's probably better for most people to use the direct cloud access method to avoid port forwarding issues.

Client side

The client just needs to access the host through a web browser. If the router has been configured to forward the port number, the client will use the host PC's IP address to connect. If cloud access was chosen, a specific link would be given to the host you will use to connect.

DesktopNow has a nice file sharing feature that allows you to upload your shared files remotely in an easy to use file browser.

There is no dedicated app to connect to DesktopNow from a mobile device, so it can be difficult to try to view and control your computer from your phone or tablet. However, the site is optimized for mobile phones, so browsing your shared files is very easy.

Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista and XP are supported, even 64-bit versions.

Another free and portable remote access program is BeamYourScreen. This program works like some of the others on this list, where the presenter is given an identification number that they must provide to another user so that they can connect to the presenter's screen.

Host side

BeamYourScreen hosts are called hosts, so the program BeamYourScreen for Hosts (Portable) is the preferred method that the host computer should use to accept remote connections. It's quick and easy to start screen sharing without having to install anything.

There is also a version that can be installed called BeamYourScreen for hosts (installation) .

Client side

Customers can also install a portable or installable version of BeamYourScreen, but there is a dedicated program BeamYourScreen for members, which is a small executable file that can be run in a similar way to being portable for hosts.

Enter the host session number in the section session ID programs to join the session.

Once connected, you can control the screen, share text and clipboard files, and communicate with text.

BeamYourScreen works with all versions of Windows, as well as Windows Server 2008 and 2003, Mac and Linux.

GoToMyPC

Pros: Simple interface. Works mostly from the browser. Drag and drop file transfer. Desktop icons for remote computers. Smooth multi-monitor support. Possibility of direct connection on the network or via the Internet.

Minuses: a distracting test server message during computer boot. Slightly reduced features when using a Mac system.

bottom line: GoToMyPC is a mature, easy-to-use remote access program with the best balance available between features and ease of use. If you don't need support for Linux or enterprise-level systems, this is the app you want.

VNC Connect

Pros: support multiple platforms. Relatively simple interface. Pretty inexpensive subscription plans, including a free plan for personal use.

Minuses: separate server and viewer applications make setup confusing. No dragging and dropping files between the viewer application and the desktop. Do not send one-time invitations from a remote computer.

VNC Connect is durable, secure and easy to use once you get the hang of it. It has fewer features than other enterprise-level remote access software, but it's also a lot cheaper.

Microsoft Remote Desktop

Microsoft introduced remote desktop apps for Android and iOS a few years ago, but this is perfect for accessing Windows computers. It's also free with no usage restrictions, and unlike Chrome Remote Desktop, the setup process is a bit more complicated, but only when you're doing it for the first time.

Where is LogMeIn?

Unfortunately, LogMeIn's free product, LogMeIn Free, is no longer available. It was one of the most popular free remote access services available, so it's too bad it's gone.

LogMeIn also runs join.me which is still running and listed above.
