Italian resorts Viareggio. Aristocratic viareggio

Viareggio

The largest of the cities of Versilia. I liked it the least: dirty, a lot of houses and cars, like in Moscow, local people are unfriendly, pedestrians do not give way, no historical sights. The free beach (spiaggia libera) is the only one in this big city and is very far away, then 10 kilometers of only paid beaches stretch.

Large park in the center Pineta di Ponente, very good for walks in the heat. There are many entertainments for children, but all are paid, except for the only tiny playground.

There are some good cafes in the park. If you are with children, I recommend the pizzeria pirate(but there is not only pizza, there are also fish dishes and Milanese), it has minigolf, for 6 euros they will give one club, but two children can play with it, and while you eat calmly, the children will have fun; the four of us ate for 55 euros (2 pizzas, assorted sea reptiles, Pepata di cozze, water and 1/2 liter of Italian white wine). It's green and beautiful here.

Market works on Thursdays along the seafront. Until 13:00.

Beach

The free beach is located on the southern outskirts of the city, behind the port. Parking near the beach paid along Viale Europa(see parking rates with Russian translation below). It is unrealistic to walk to the city, only by car or bicycle. Also a huge free beach is located along the natural reserve Torre del Lago(translator from Italian: Tower on the lake), this is a piece of forest 1 kilometer wide and 5 kilometers long. You can park your car for free at Via dei Comparini ior u Villa Borobne, and then through the forest on foot for 15 minutes. On weekends, you need to arrive early, otherwise the parking lot will be busy.

Parking in Viareggio

In the entire central part and along the sea, packages are paid. Viareggio Divided into several parking areas. The closer to the sea, the higher the cost of parking. Parking is paid on weekdays and weekends.
Zone A:
- paid from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 20:00;

Zone B:

White truffle - a royal delicacy! “Black gold”, “white pearl”, “white diamond”, “king of food” - what sublime epithets this delicacy has not been awarded, and what holidays gourmets do not arrange in his honor! The Italians are very proud of him and appreciate him very much! "Hunting" for truffles is a real, almost sacred ritual, in which anyone can now participate! A special offer for gourmets who are not afraid of adventure and are ready to follow the scent! In the search for treasures, guests will be accompanied by a professional "hunter" - "tartufayo" (professional truffle hunter) and his wise dog. And at the end of the race, the “hunters” will have a truffle tasting or, alternatively, a lunch of truffle dishes. This is a very exclusive and unique excursion that takes place in the beautiful forests of the Tuscan hills, where the largest truffle in the world (2540 grams) was found in 1954. During the hunt, the participants will be explained the qualities of the white truffle and its habitat, the different species found in Tuscany and the respective collection periods and of course we will enrich our tour with legends and anecdotes about truffles that always fascinate those who want to get to know this mysterious fruit of the earth!

    RU\Engl Wonderful resort town.

RU\Engl Wonderful resort town. We have repeatedly rested in these places, but a little further, in Liguria. In our opinion, Viareggio is more European, there is a little less Italian flavor, but it is more "party-y". There is a wide pedestrian promenade, where there are many open restaurants and branded shops open until late at night. When all Viareggio is already sleeping, it is full of people and life is in full swing! The beaches are all paid, but neat, well-groomed and at a very reasonable price. Wonderful resort town. A small resort town where the Italians themselves rest.

A small resort town where the Italians themselves rest. I like that the resort has not yet been promoted by travel agencies. The weather in August is gorgeous, the sun does not bake on the beach, but pleasantly warms and strokes. The sea is incomparably warm, for me this is one of the important factors. I don’t like to swim in every sea, but here I didn’t want to go out. One day there were waves, which were a complete pleasure to catch - everyone was in the sea. The beach is incredible sand. The beach strip is wide - 15-20 rows. I am a fan of narrower ones, on the first day I was strained that the sea was not visible from the trestle bed, but then either I got used to it, or the sea became visible :) Very good location of the city for visiting nearby cities - Pisa, Luca. I highly recommend. Promenade - 3 km boulevard with expensive shops and cafes. There is nothing special to do in the city, the evening is walking along the promenade. The city has a large park where you can ride bicycles.

    Well equipped beaches.

Well equipped beaches. You can choose an umbrella or a tent. Almost on every beach you can rent a cabana and leave your things there for the entire rental period. When you rent an umbrella or a tent on the beach, you are guaranteed to get your place in the sun. Good and wide promenade, 10-12 km. long. Along the entire coast, which is 30-40 km. There is a bike path, I advise you to rent a bike. They cook well in any restaurant. There is no climate, the temperature during the day is no more than 30 degrees, in the evening 20-22 degrees, around the mountain, this explains such a wonderful climate. The sea is very warm.

Quality rest is an obligatory attribute of a modern successful business person. If you classify yourself as one of those, then choosing a place for a vacation according to the criterion "price / quality" does not present any problem. We act according to the proven principle “it doesn’t happen expensively” and choose, or rather - Viareggio. True, it is worth considering - using the name of this resort town together with the word "economically" contradicts the very structure of the universe.

ViareggeO is located in Versilia - the universally recognized center of fashionable holidays in the Apennines. The resorts adjacent to it are about the same expensive and famous - the rest of the areas of the Tuscan coast will still grow to their level of service for a very long time. Viareggio can certainly be called a capitalist holiday resort with a human face.

Tell me, which city's shipyards have made a name for themselves in the production of the most expensive yachts in the world? Where are the largest night discos in Italy located, and the path created for evening promenades dazzles the eyes in the evenings, turning into an endless string of boutiques, beauty salons and spa centers? The answer is as clear as the sun on a southern Italian morning: in Viareggio, a city of quiet relaxation for big money and wealthy people.

Although in the case of money, we, perhaps, were mistaken. They do not rest here, but work hard. With the advent of our successful fellow citizens to the global tourism market, local real estate has become one of the most popular ways to increase savings. A hundred-square-meter housing in Viareggio costs more than a million euros, and the cost of truly luxurious mansions exceeds sixty. However, this does not stop people who know a lot about business - the flow of those wishing to invest in local real estate is not weakening.

Holidays in Viareggio

If everything is in order with the elite new building in Viareggio, then there is tension with the architectural sights. And the city itself, unlike most small Italian resorts, does not have the status of a former maritime republic or an ancient Roman center of trade. Everything is much more prosaic - a small fishing village was such until the end of the 18th century, until wealthy residents tired of business began to come there and hide from worldly worries behind the Apuan Alps and pine groves. Moreover, the mention of Viareggio - which is uncharacteristic for an old Italy - can be found for the first time only in the annals of the 15th century. Residents - another fashionable place located nearby - erected a watchtower here with the same name: "Via Reggio". Later, a small trading port arose here: the mouth of the Burlamacca River was a suitable point for loading and unloading ships. With the development of shipbuilding, the affairs of the tiny settlement went smoothly - a convenient descent to the water was the main reason why several shipyards arose here at once. This is how Viareggio appeared: a port, small town, especially lacking stars from the sky. Yes, and there was no need for him - several centuries passed, and the stars began to come here on their own.

Viareggio is chosen by the Italians themselves as their place of rest - why not a recommendation for foreign guests who want to have a great vacation? Let's agree with the Apennine "middle class": Viareggio is one of the few places where nerve cells, contrary to the assurances of doctors, are really restored. The only problem, as mentioned above, is the almost complete lack of historical sights. Unless the Matilde Tower can somehow pass for a medieval miracle. Most of the city's buildings were erected in the Art Nouveau style. The only information known about the development is that a certain Belluomini developed the city project. For the Russian ear, this venerable name says little. Like the name of Percy Shelley, an English poet who came here with his wife and friend, the famous Lord Byron. The bust of the first adorns the square of the same name, and tourists of all nationalities look at it with respect. You can also go to see the villa of Napoleon's sister Paolina Borghese, located on Via Machiavelli, 2, the ticket costs 2.5 euros. In general, long romantic evenings at the foot of the monumental ancient abbeys and medieval castles will have to be forgotten and sublimated into something else. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities in Viareggio for this. Well, if a creative person cannot spend at least a week without medieval ruins, it is quite possible to get to and: there are more than enough castles, towers and ancient universities.

So, you have arrived in Viareggio. Let's make a reservation right away: it is better not to do this at the very beginning of summer, since the weather can be unstable. For starters, you can lie on the beach, the entrance to each of which, by the way, is paid. But there is a reason: almost everyone has a special insignia - the "blue flag", confirming the cleanliness and high level of service. The cost is 15-20 euros per day for a beach "gentleman's set": an umbrella, two sun loungers and an armchair, plus the opportunity to use a shower, changing room and toilet. However, there were rumors that some lucky tourists also found municipal beaches - but they were not very satisfied with the level of service: it was very dirty and crowded. Having survived the morning invasion of sellers of all kinds of trinkets and souvenirs, we begin to enjoy the sea: it is clean and extraordinarily beautiful here. You can get to the beach until 18:00 - after they are locked. Holidays on the maritime theme in Viareggio can be combined with a visit to luxury shipyards that manufacture luxury yachts here for the powerful. For example, the shipyard Intermare - it was here that the famous "Majora 38DP" was launched. For the uninitiated - a 38-meter miracle walking on turquoise waves with a dining area, game tables, a bar, a relaxation area, a solarium and an office for joint meals.

The shipyards of Viareggio annually launch several of these beauties.

What to see in Viareggio?

Viareggio, unfortunately for lovers of ancient sights, looks like a modern resort town: most of the sights of the Old Town were destroyed during the bombing of World War II.

However, one should not think that there are no beautiful places in Viareggio that can conquer the traveler with their landscapes. So, let's start a walk through the famous Tuscan town.

city embankment

The promenade of Viareggio is a favorite place for walking locals and tourists, and this is not surprising. The promenade, the total length of which is about 3 kilometers, contains elegant cafes and restaurants, taverns and luxury hotels, boutiques and very interesting (even for those who just like to look at windows) ateliers of local craftsmen. In addition, the surviving old Liberty style villas, which are the hallmark of Viardegio, overlook the embankment with their windows and facades.

Did you know that it was in this city that the famous Italian composer, Giacomo Puccini, loved to relax. Guests of Viareggio can visit his museum, organized, respectively, in his own villa - Villa Puccini, located near the town, in Torre del Lago.

It is worth mentioning that in February / March every year the Viareggio embankment becomes the scene for the most famous noisy action - the Carnival in Viareggio.

Torre Matilde

Via della Foce, 55

The real symbol of Viareggio is the Tower of Viareggio, better known as Torre Matilde. The name was given to the tower by mistake: a long time ago, historians attributed the fact of the construction of the tower to the handiwork of Princess Mathilde Canossa. In fact, the building was built in 1534 after the decision of the rulers of the city of Lucca to protect the city from the raid of robbers. The material used to build the tower was mined from the ruins of an ancient castle that towered nearby. Next to the tower was built the Palazzo del Commissario, connected to the tower by a portico used to announce potential danger. The tower was used as a prison in the nineteenth century. In 1823, when the prison was moved to another location, the tower was used as a telegraph building for two decades.

After a long period of neglect, today the building has been opened to the public as an exposition hall for cultural events and exhibitions.

Villa Pauline Bonaparte (Villa Paolina)

Via Machiavelli, 2

Among the most important sights of Viareggio, we note the beautiful residence of Napoleon's sister, Pauline Bonaparte, built in 1882 on the seashore for Pauline and her lover, the musician Giovanni Pacini. The neoclassical residence, built by the architect Giovanni Lazzarini, once hosted famous cultural figures of Italy and Europe: Polina was very fond of music, painting and poetry and often held parties and receptions in the villa.

The interior of the villa is beautiful and unusual: the walls of the residence's rooms are painted in various shades of beige, richly decorated with vignettes and bas-reliefs, and there is no shortage of valuable paintings by Bonaparte's contemporaries. The garden adjoins the villa, where Polina previously staged performances in the open space for her guests.

Villa Paolina. Photo expedia.it

Villa Paolina is currently open to the public. Three important museums of Viareggio are located in its halls at once: the Archaeological Museum "Alberto Carlo Blanc", founded in 1974, the Museum of Musical Instruments "Giovanni Ciuffreda", opened in 1994, and the Art Gallery of Lorenzo Viani, dedicated to contemporary art.

Pineta di Ponente

Viale Capponi

Pineta di Ponente is the green gem of Viareggio. Created in 1747 to protect the city from cold and strong sea winds, the park has become a real landmark of Viareggio, a place where it is pleasant to walk, breathing in the coniferous aromas of tall pines. And in the very center of the park you can admire the graceful white swans living in an artificially created lake. The park is a place of meetings and walks for locals and tourists, and various sporting events and concerts are often held here.

Center for Contemporary Art Mateucci (Centro Matteucci Per L "Arte Moderna)

Via Gabriele D'Annunzio, 22

Opening hours: Thursday - Sunday - from 15:30 to 19:30

The Mateucci Center for Contemporary Art houses 19th and 20th century Italian paintings and often hosts temporary exhibitions of lesser-known Italian artists, providing a great chance to meet contemporary masters.

Villa Bourbon

Villa Bourbon is located on the road that connects the city with the borgo Torre del Lago. The villa was built in 1821, designed by Lorenzo Nottolini for Duchess Maria Louise of Bourbon.

The villa consists of three buildings, each of which occupies three floors. The central building served as the actual residence, while the other two rooms were equipped as stables and warehouses. The interior of the villa is striking in its brilliance: the walls and ceilings of the residence are decorated with beautiful frescoes, the floors and stairs are inlaid with precious stones. The residence is located within the magnificent Natural Park of Migliarino San Rossore - Massaciuccoli. Next to the villa is a small chapel built in 1849 by Charles III of Bourbon.

The villa and park are currently used for cultural events.

Church of Sant'Andrea (Chiesa di Sant'Andrea)

via Sant'Andrea, 55

In 1836, the Duke of Lucca, Charles Louis of Bourbon, issued a decree on the construction of a new church parish in Viareggio, which would be dedicated to St. Andrew the First-Called. The cathedral was built in 1842 by the Lucca engineer Michele Cervelli.

Inside the church are kept interesting works of art and numerous holy relics. The famous Italian priest, Saint Antonio Maria Pucci, preached in the cathedral and was buried here.

What to do in Viareggio?

Big money - big fun. Nightclubs and discos in Viareggio (mostly in the Latin rhythm) resemble buzzing beehives with the onset of the dark time of the day: La Capannina and Bagno Balena have long become iconic places for club recreation. It doesn't make much sense to describe local restaurants - everything is delicious and expensive, in the best traditions of executive class resorts. A pleasant addition to sea delicacies can be a meeting at the next table with one of the famous players of the Italian football series "A" or show business stars. You can also find quite affordable places - for example, "Buonamico" on Via San Andrea, 27.

Viareggio. Photo flickr.com

By the degree of high cost and pathos, Viareggio still does not belong to the palm - much more pretentious, for example, Forte dei Marmi. But there are spectacles here, the impressions from which will remain for the rest of your life. Among them is the famous Carnival in Viareggio. Imagine something between the unbridled half-naked splendor of the extravaganza in Rio de Janeiro and the cold aristocracy of the Venice Carnival. Represented? Now forget it, because in Viareggio everything is completely different. The main acting characters here are huge papier-mâché dolls: these are real works of art, moreover, they require outstanding management skills. The movement of the largest specimens is controlled by up to two dozen people who skillfully manage with a cunning system of counterweights - the weight of a large figure can reach several tons. Do not lose sight of the sense load - for the locals, the carnival is an occasion to show irony and humor in relation to many aspects of both small-town and all-Italian life. The last carnival, for example, presented the song "Scissorhands Silvio" to the audience, hinting at the prime minister's job cuts.

Carnival in Viareggio. Photo flickr.com

The main action of Viareggio came into being in February 1873, when the local "golden youth" decided to have a fun open-air meeting of spring. At the first carnival, moving platforms were made of wood and jute, and unlike the current creations of enthusiasts, they even ended up in museums. The traditions of the celebration were interrupted by two World Wars, but each time, thanks to the zeal of enthusiasts, they were resumed - and reached a new, higher level. Since 1954, the National Broadcasting Company of Italy, which Eurovision joined in 1958, has been broadcasting the carnival in Viareggio all over the planet.

Viareggio is a quiet, calm city where you can hide from endless calls, the noise of megacities and business correspondence. Hotels located near the beaches, wide shopping opportunities, rich cultural program - all this will make your stay in the capital of Versilia incomparable and memorable for a long time. Well, you can be sure that Viareggio is worth all the money spent on it - hundreds of thousands of tourists visiting this resort every year cannot be wrong.

Viareggio Italy is a resort for people who prefer to relax in the most comfortable conditions. In this city, located on the coast of the Ligurian Sea, Italians of noble origin began to rest in the 9th century, however, the tradition has been preserved to this day. The climate of the resort is Mediterranean, humid winds often blow, sometimes bringing rain with them. Summers in Viareggio are dry, while winters are usually warm. The developed structure provides a constant flow of not only tourists, but also native Italians. It is worth finding out what attractions are in the resort, how to get there and what to do.

Resort attractions

The resort is known for its pine forests and green hills, which, combined with the amazing sea, make the scenery magnificent. Along with this, the city has preserved the remains of the architectural heritage of Italy, but there are not as many of them as in other cities of the country.

Viareggio (Italy) attractions

Matilda Tower

The Matilda Tower is the main attraction of Viareggio, it is from it that you should start your acquaintance with architectural monuments. According to historians, the building was named after Princess Matilda of Kanosskaya, who lived in Italy at the beginning of the second millennium. However, an error in the research was revealed later - in fact, the tower was built by order of the rulers of Lucca in 1534 to defend the city from robber raids. Nevertheless, the name La Torre Matilde was assigned to the tower, which is still used today.

Viareggio Italy

Villa Giacomo Puccini

The great Italian composer was very fond of relaxing here. To this day, Torre del Lago houses his villa, which houses a museum dedicated to the memory of Puccini.

Additional Information! Every year, Viareggio hosts the International Opera Festival in honor of the composer.

Villa Giacomo Puccini

Villa Bourbon

This is a building that impresses tourists with its luxurious interior design. The stairs and floor of the villa are inlaid with precious stones, while the walls and ceiling are painted with elaborate frescoes. Currently, the building houses a museum, which constantly hosts exhibitions of young artists.

Pineta di Ponente

This park was built in 1747. The authorities decided to create the "Green Pearl of Viareggio" to provide residents and tourists with walks in the fresh air, away from the humid sea winds. The park complex impresses with its splendor to this day. Its main decoration is an artificial lake in the center of the park, in which snow-white swans swim.

Types of recreation in the city

Viareggio Italy is famous for its magnificent beaches throughout the world. What is their advantage? The answer is simple - fine sand, clear water and convenient entry into the sea make them attractive and famous. The European Union has awarded all the beaches of Viareggio "Blue Flags" for the high level of service and absolute cleanliness.

The beaches of the resort are divided into private and municipal, while the level of service is higher in private beach areas. This is due to the fact that local enterprising residents rent them and create the most comfortable conditions for vacationers. One of these conditions is pools with sea water - tourists bathe in them during a storm at sea.

Pineta di Ponente

It should be noted that a beach holiday is a paid service. The cost of visiting the municipal beach costs approximately 3 euros per day, and private - from 15 euros* per day.

Attention! Viareggio Italy resort Lecciona beach, located between the resort and Torro del Lago is free. At 18 pm all the beaches of Viareggio close.

In Viareggio, you can choose a hotel with a private beach, but you should remember that it is recommended to book such a hotel two to three weeks before your vacation, otherwise all places will be occupied.

Beach activities include diving, jet skis and sailing.

The duration of the carnival is one month. All this time, various festivals and masquerades are also held in neighboring towns. This event is worth visiting, because the impressions of the holiday will remain in the memories of every traveler for a long time.
