To look at the beautifully drawn bridges in St. Petersburg is a ritual. There is no other way to explain why even many indigenous residents of the city every season come to the center at least once at night to, sometimes shivering from the coolness and basking in cognac, meditate for the hundredth time on a ten-minute spectacle. Apparently, the ritual is worth it. More precisely, it is really worth it.

Schedule for drawing bridges in St. Petersburg in 2019

We provide in our article the schedule for the distribution of crossings of the Northern capital, while please keep in mind that on a particular day it may change.

There are many sites on the Internet that publish the time of divorce, but there is only one official source: Mostotrest State Budgetary Institution, which is directly responsible, as its name implies, for these very bridges. His website:, by the way, is very convenient and pretty. Be sure, when going to the bridge show, go to it and make sure that nothing has changed in the schedule. The same rule works if you are going to spend part of the night on Vasilyevsky Island or the Petrograd side, after which you need to go to the "mainland" or vice versa.

It should be noted that since 2017, two bridges - the Palace and Troitsky bridges - are bred 15 minutes earlier than in previous years. This was done at the request of companies that conduct excursions along the rivers and canals of the city. Tourists now have an extra 15 minutes to sail under the raised bridges and admire the famous postcard views of the Northern capital in the absence of large cargo ships, for which, in fact, these bridges are raised 🙂

In 2019, navigation officially starts on April 10. As for its completion, we wrote about it.

Divorce of Sampsonievskiy, Grenadierskiy, Kantemirovskiy bridges is carried out from 1:30 to 4:30 upon prior request 2 days in advance.

When is bridge building completed?
In accordance with the Decree of the Government of St. Petersburg, the bridges are bred:
- on the arms of the Neva from April 20 to November 15;
- on the Neva and Malaya Neva, that is, including in relation to the most popular bridges - Palace, Trinity and Blagoveshchensky - from April 10 to November 30.

But it must be borne in mind that these are general parameters that are adjusted depending on the ice situation and the presence of ships that need to pass along the Neva. In autumn, especially in deep autumn, the flow of ships gradually decreases, and if there are no applications for the passage of dry cargo ships and tankers on a specific date, then the bridges remain in a reduced position. The same thing happens if suddenly the Neva is covered with ice in November, as it sometimes happened, and, accordingly, not a single ship can pass.

Where to watch the drawing of bridges

In total, nine bridges in St. Petersburg "spread" their "wings" on a permanent basis, three more - on special request. Three of them are located in the tourist center of the city - Blagoveshchensky, Palace and Trinity, which are located next to each other.

There are several options for the scheme, how to look at this whole show:

1) Stand next to the Palace Bridge (next to the Hermitage), see its bridge close up and little or almost nothing from Troitsky. This is the most common and, accordingly, the most crowded way.

2) Stand next to Troitsky, first look at the Palace from a kilometer distance, and then closely - at Troitsky. Also, in general, so-so.

3) Ours: correctly choose a point between two bridges and see everything.

4) Without fuss and hustle, look at the parting Palace Bridge from Vasilievsky Island, from the Kunstkamera.

Now briefly about each.

Option 1 is a classic scheme that beginners fall for.

The Palace Bridge was bred at 01.25 (since 2017 - at ten o'clock). Tourists and other inexperienced people crowd the embankments - Palace and Admiralteyskaya - on both sides of the bridge (we mean the end of the bridge, which is located on the "mainland", near the Hermitage, and not on Vasilyevsky Island) in order to be as close to the action as possible .

It looks like this:

Moreover, the crowd on warm days, including weekdays, gathers forty minutes - an hour before the start, so it is very difficult to get into the first row of the “ground floor”, you have to stand on tiptoe and jump out from behind. Well, if you are 190+ centimeters, and if you are small, then there is nothing to catch.

There is also a version of the “gallery”: the Hermitage opens onto the Palace Embankment near the Palace Bridge, and it just has a high porch on this side, look at the photos below.

But even there, however, there is not much space - there will definitely not be enough for everyone with a full house.

When the Palace is bred, everyone first admires and takes pictures, and then most of the crowd rushes to the Trinity Bridge. However, Troitsky is bred only 10 minutes later than Palace, that is, just about the very moment when admiring Palace ends.

And the distance between them is 1.24 kilometers. And to run in two minutes, and even in ten, from one bridge to another is difficult. As a result, you come to the Trinity Bridge when it is already all divorced. There is an option to look at Troitsky from afar, but as practice shows, nothing is really visible.

However, if one bridge, moreover, the most picturesque one, is enough for you, and the day turned out to be cold, rainy and weekday, that is, there will not be a large crowd, then option 1 is your option.

Option 2 - watch only Trinity

This scheme has the advantage that the embankments in the Troitsky Bridge area are very small, so you will have almost no competitors. You will also see the Palace, but from a kilometer distance, that is, approximately, in general terms - which, of course, is a minus.

Well, Troitsky is all yours. At the same time, only one span rises from it, which is very large in size, so the sight, especially if you are standing nearby, is monumental.

Option 3 - the golden mean

We found a point between the two bridges, which, in our opinion, allows us to look at the separation of both from an acceptable distance. This place is on the Palace Embankment opposite the building at number 26.

Here is how the Palace Bridge looks from this point:

And this is Troitsky (the photo was taken in front of the neighboring building, Palace Embankment 18).

The downside is that you will be a rare spectator, that is, you will not feel the emotional tension of the crowd. But for photos taken with a tripod, a decent camera with a good lens is just right.

Option 4 - calm

We are watching the opening of the Palace Bridge from the University Embankment (next to the VO Arrow). We get to the parapet of the Neva somewhere opposite the Kunstkamera. The view from there will be like in this photo.

On the opposite side of the Neva is the Admiralty, which is where you get the classic postcard views of Petropavlovka and the spread wings of the Palace Bridge. From our point of view, of course, there is no such kind. But there are also obvious advantages.

Firstly, there are much fewer people here than on the other side of the Neva. You can take a seat in the first row at the parapet 5 minutes before the bridge is opened.

Secondly, from the nearby Strelka of Vasilyevsky Island, you can take excellent photos of the same Petropavlovka, however, without a bridge.

Thirdly, those who live in the north or on Vaska will not be forced to hang somewhere in the center after the show of the bridges. To get to the Petrograd side, you need to cross the Birzhevoy Bridge (or Tuchkov), and from Petrogradka at any time, for example, through the Kamennoostrovsky and Ushakovsky bridges to yourself - to the northern districts of the city. Fortunately, these crossings are not bred. Or go along the Kronverkskaya embankment to look at the divorced Troitsky, enjoying magnificent views along the way.

If you didn’t suddenly have time to cross the Birzhevoy Bridge before its wiring, it doesn’t matter. It is now possible to leave Vaska via the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD), both to the north of the city and to the south.

Option 5 - we look from the water. Night boat trip under the bridges

From the water, the impression is completely different, and this is not a rehash of water barkers, everything really is.
Night boat trips are arranged almost the same as day trips, which you can read about - in the sense that the vessels are the same, from double-deck motor ships to small motorized troughs; the night time is slightly longer and the cost is higher. For example: 1.5 hours for 800 - 1000 rubles, depending on the type of vessel and duration, instead of 1 hour and 700 rubles in the afternoon.

You can book this tour by clicking on the banner below.

It is important to immediately warn here: if the tour starts after 00.00, then when buying via the Internet, you need to choose the very date that began after these 00.00. If the tour is on the night of June 24-25, then you need to buy on June 25.

Option 6 - we look from the roofs. The best vantage points

Someone's hands and backs will not prevent you from seeing the magical action of the divorce of St. Petersburg bridges. From the roof, the waters of the Neva will be visible at a glance. And not only Neva. This is also a unique chance to look down on the city itself! Everyone will envy your photos, including professional photographers 🙂 You can choose one of the three roofs on the side of the Neva that is convenient for you, where our guides will take you.
You can read about the tour and order.

2. With a large crowd, selfie sticks help out a lot. The sidewalk along the embankment, from which you will be photographed against the background of the bridge, is narrow, and a lot of people walk along it.

3. If you need really, really good photos or videos, then the most important of all photographic equipment is a tripod. It’s better to forget the camera, but you need to take a tripod, because you can still ask someone for a camera, but most likely not a tripod.

4. They drive along the embankment and next to it, ready to take you home. First, the farther from the bridges, the cheaper they are; secondly, an official taxi is more reliable, safer, and if more expensive, then not much.

5. For lovers of bicycles - take a bicycle, if you don't have your own - there is a bike rental. You will have to swear trying to squeeze through the crowd, but (due to the mobility of a two-wheeled friend) you can see the opening of three bridges at once: Blagoveshchensky, Palace and Trinity.

6. For those who want this classic photo from St. Petersburg:

you need to take a place next to the Palace Bridge on the English Embankment, opposite the Admiralty.

Yes, but how, you ask, is the same bridge on which the art group "Voina" wrote a word in which the first letter is the second letter in the word "ear", and the second letter is the first letter in the word "ear" , and so on? This is the Liteiny Bridge, it is also located in the center - two kilometers from Nevsky Prospekt along Liteiny. True, it is not particularly popular with tourists. But if anything, he gets divorced at 01.40.

Ivan Semenov

Wherever the guest of the city on the Neva goes, during his stay here he is simply obliged to visit the Palace Embankment. For two reasons: firstly, it is difficult to find a more beautiful place in St. Petersburg (especially in clear weather) and secondly, there is simply a concentration of historical sights that must be visited. One of them is the Hermitage Bridge (between houses Nos. 32 and 34).

What is the Hermitage Bridge famous for?

This is the oldest stone bridge in St. Petersburg. It is located on the Palace Embankment in the Central District of the city. It rises in the place where the Winter Canal flows into the river. Neva. The artificial canal itself (aka the Winter Canal) connects the Moika and the Neva. After all, as you know, Peter I dreamed of turning his capital into a European city with a network of canals.

The Hermitage Bridge was built to connect the First and Second Admiralty Islands, separated by a canal and It was called differently at different times: Zimnedvortsovy and Verkhnenaberezhny.

Initially, the bridge was hoist and wooden, built according to the Dutch drawings of that time (1718-20). But already by 1766 it was replaced by a stone one, since at that time (until 1784) the banks of the Neva and Moika rivers were dressed in their granite clothes. In this way. The winter ditch that connects these rivers has also been transformed and encased in granite. The Hermitage Bridge became the first stone bridge in the capital of the Russian Empire.

Subsequently, the construction of the bridge from a brick vault with limestone and facade granite arches was replaced with reinforced concrete (architect K.M. Dmitriev and engineer A.D. Sapershtein, 1934). But the historical appearance was carefully preserved, and in 1950, during the reconstruction, the restored architectural decoration of the ramps was added.

Behind the Hermitage Bridge one can see an arch with galleries - a passage connecting the buildings of the Big (Old) Hermitage on the left bank of the Winter Canal and the Hermitage Theater on the right. Passing along the Palace Embankment, remember associated with this place. After all, that is why the Hermitage Bridge acquired another, unofficial name - Liza's Bridge. Throw coins, even if your love is mutual :)

Bridge across the Winter Canal in St. Petersburg. The first wooden drawbridge was built on this site in 1718-1720. Later, in 1763-1766, in its place, a single-span granite arch bridge with stone parapets was built according to the project of Yu.

The first name of the bridge, given to it in 1738, was Verkhneberezhny, in honor of the Upper Embankment, as the Palace Embankment was then called. However, by the middle of the 18th century, the bridge was often called the Winter Palace, in honor of the nearby Winter Palace. Finally, at the end of the 18th century, the name Palace Bridge appeared, but it did not become final either. It was only in 1828 that the bridge received its current name from the name of the Hermitage Theater built next to it.

After the action appeared in P. I. Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades, when Liza throws herself from the Hermitage Bridge into the waters of the Winter Canal, the bridge got the common name “Liza’s Bridge”.

With the appearance of a granite structure near the Hermitage bridge in 1763-1766, it became the first stone bridge in St. Petersburg.

The view of the Hermitage Bridge along with the arched gallery above it from Millionnaya Street is considered one of the symbols of St. Petersburg, it is often photographed and depicted on tourist postcards.

The bridge is 22.1 m long and 15.2 m wide.

Note to tourists:

A visit to the Hermitage Bridge will be of interest to tourists interested in the architecture of the 18th century, and can also become one of the points of the excursion program while exploring neighboring attractions -,

In this most picturesque corner of St. Petersburg, the severity of the classics, royal grandeur and the refined charm of Russian architecture are organically intertwined. People of high art never cease to draw inspiration from it: photographers create unique pictures, artists display unparalleled beauty on their canvases, architects try to explore the highest examples of the heritage of their predecessors, and decorators often transfer the local surroundings to creative sites. In the end, thousands of ordinary people flock here, appreciating beauty and wanting to plunge into the magical world of St. Petersburg embankments, palaces, arched passages, river panoramas and, of course, bridges. And here he is - our hero, spread out between the Hermitage Theater and the Great Hermitage. Meet the Hermitage Bridge.

He changed names, while remaining a symbol of St. Petersburg ...

So that Peter the Great could get into the boat almost at the threshold of his home - the Winter Palace, the craftsmen created a man-made canal connecting the Neva and the Moika. The canal will be called the Winter Canal, and literally immediately after the arrangement, two drawbridges will be thrown across it, known today as the Hermitage and 1st Winter. The embankments of the Neva at that time were dressed in granite, the parapets and ledges necessary for crossings were erected on them, and the Hermitage Bridge successfully fit into the overall picture of pomp and elegance.

But let's go back, perhaps, to 1718... Then there was still no trace of this building in the form in which we are used to seeing it. And there was a wooden drawbridge built by Hermann van Boles. The two wings of the crossing were bred using gears and levers. After 20 years, the bridge was named Verkhnenaberezhny. In periodic rebuilding and repairs, it lasted a little less than half a century. In 1763-66. the wooden ferry was replaced by a stone one, decorated with granite facing. This single-span arched bridge with stone parapets, designed by the architect Yuri Felten, was the first of its kind in St. Petersburg and is still considered the "eldest" in the city. Its peculiarity was that, rising above the Winter Canal, it bends in an arc, becoming like a hump.

In general, the Upper Embankment Bridge (later people will call it the Zimnedvortsovy Bridge) had a rather complicated structure - a vault made of brick and limestone. The entire structure was laid with granite rows and facade arches. Coastal supports were also clad in granite. The year 1828 was marked by the fact that the bridge acquired its current name - the Hermitage.

1934, resolution: Do not touch the “Hump!”

A little more than a century has passed… Specialists who checked the technical condition of the Hermitage Bridge in 1933 stated that the structure was in a state close to catastrophic. The water eroded the foundations of the bridge to the point that it exposed the original wooden piles, the vault was slowly collapsing, some seams between the stones began to diverge, others completely “dissolved”. A group led by architect Dmitriev, engineer Sapershtein and consultant Perederiy was involved in the immediate reconstruction. According to their project, the brick vault was converted into a reinforced concrete hingeless monolith. The repairmen increased the width of the bridge by almost 1.5 m. They swung, it was, in order to reduce the “hump”, but then the members of the architectural committee expressed their “against”. As a result, it was decided to "sacrifice" only lamp stands. So, having received only one vault from the new one, the Hermitage Bridge retained its “proprietary” curvature, slopes at the entrance, convex parapets.

After some time - at the very beginning of the 50s - the decor of the ramps will also be restored. In total, at the exit today we have: the width of the Hermitage is 15.2 m, the length is 22.1 m.

From it - into the water, under it - into traffic jams

We have already told about how our hero changed names. Yes, they just didn’t mention one more name that “stuck” to the Hermitage Bridge. After Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades, during the premiere in St. Petersburg, one of the heroines of the opera, Liza, threw herself from him into the deadly embrace of the water surface of the Winter Canal, the name "Lisa's Bridge" was firmly stuck to the bridge.

The Hermitage Bridge is known not only as the first stone bridge in St. Petersburg and one of the most frequent tourist photos: Winter Canal is famous, among other things, for ... river traffic jams. Like beads strung on a thread, ships and small boats stretch one after another, trying to squeeze into the narrow neck formed by the local shores.

Alas, today we are unlikely to find out whether the unique harmony formed by all the structures in the area of the Winter Canal was foreseen in advance by their creators. Those who arrived in this corner of St. Petersburg can only admire the human talent: they say that if you climb the 1st Winter Bridge and turn your gaze along the groove, then a unique perspective will appear to him. It will include both the grandeur of the Old Hermitage and the unearthly beauty of the Hermitage Theatre. And it completes this wonderful picture - the Hermitage Bridge.
