Patchouli - uses of leaves in medicine and perfumery. What perfumes and eau de toilette are there with the scent of patchouli?

The aroma of patchouli is a woody type and has a warm, sweetish aroma.

Patchouli is vaguely reminiscent of vetiver in its earthy scent (similar chemicals and habitat), but otherwise it is unique - heavy, rich, herbaceous, bitter-smoky, resinous-tart. As the oil ages, it develops a deeper aroma, trading the dark, cool dryness for a taste of dark chocolate or unripe fruit.

Patchouli is a perennial tropical shrubby plant from the genus Pogostemon. Treated patchouli leaves are renowned for their strong and attractive aroma, which is why they have been used in perfumery for centuries. Interestingly, fresh patchouli leaves do not smell. Before obtaining essential oils, the plant leaves must be slightly dried and subjected to long-term fermentation. Patchouli is native to Asia, specifically the Philippines, but the plant is now also found in West Africa and South America.

The name "patchouli" comes from the Tamil words: patchai, which means "green", and ellai - "leaf". Patchouli is one of the few components that in the world of modern perfumery are still original and do not need to be replaced with synthetic analogues. So we have a unique opportunity to hear patchouli exactly in the form in which it drove all the women of the European high society of the 19th century crazy. At that time, pieces of fabric, shawls and cashmere pashminas were brought from India and, in order to protect the precious goods from moths during the long journey, they were laid out with dry patchouli leaves. The stoles that smelled through and through literally hypnotized their new owners. Oriental fabrics gained popularity in Europe and began to be copied by local craftsmen, but they still had to bring the patchouli scent from the East. However, in 1837, the famous Spanish monk and botanist Francisco Manuel Blanco revealed the secret of the mysterious plant.

The peak of fame for the aroma of patchouli in Europe and America occurred in the 60-70s of the 20th century. It was the favorite smell of hippies, who widely used the oil and incense of this plant (from inexpensive and low-quality raw materials) to eliminate the smell of marijuana around them.

Patchouli-scented perfumes are extremely popular among modern women. The exotic, unusual woody-earthy aroma is one of the most beloved by modern perfumers. The combination with sandalwood, ylang-ylang and citrus components allows you to create different compositions that manifest themselves differently on the skin.

8 of the brightest perfumes with the aroma of patchouli:

1. Coquillete Paris Sumatera is a fresh patchouli extract from the island of Sumatra.
The perfume opens with green patchouli with elegant floral accords of Chinese jasmine and white flowers. The chypre character of the first notes is emphasized by spicy hints of Indian black pepper and cinnamon from Sri Lanka. The heart of the fragrance gives a combination of cedar, musk and patchouli, and the base is a wonderful combination of Madagascar vanilla and jasmine. 2. Roland V. Paris Exosens Patchouli- this is a light wind blowing from the coast, and carrying with it the tenderness of greenery, the moisture of the earth and the spicy haze of balms. 3. Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche - romantic freshness and soaring lightness of a warm summer morning, when drops of dew have not yet left the green lush grass. 4. Armaf Niche Platinum is a masculine fragrance in which earthy-tart patchouli in an elegant composition serves as an excellent background for revealing the bright herbal and resinous tints of labdanum and cistus. Complex modulations, interesting combinations and an alluring feeling of warmth in the perfume bewitch those around you.

Patchouli is a beautiful green herbaceous shrub from the mint family. The herb features delicate pinkish-white flowers and fragrant leaves that have been used for centuries in perfumery due to their wonderful and strong aroma. Patchouli essential oil is phenomenal with extraordinary health benefits.

Botanical name: Pogostemon cablin

The plant is an aromatic shrub that can grow up to 1 meter in moist, rich soils. Leaves are 7-10 cm long, ovate. Variable purple-green color when grown in full sun, but turn bright green in the shade. Small, thin, pinkish flowers are bordered by long spines. Once the plant blooms, you will notice that the flowers are more fragrant than the leaves. The leaves, flowers and seeds all have a stronger aroma when crushed. Crushing some of the stems and leaves in your hands will release a strong aroma around the garden.

Patchouli is tolerant to Australian conditions. Its natural habitat is in Malaysia and India, so it prefers humid and tropical conditions. However, it is not difficult to create a suitable environment in your own garden. Read also about its medicinal properties.

There are many uses of patchouli, the most well known being in perfumery and as a scented oil. One of the earliest known uses was as a protection against bedbugs and moths. Patchouli leaves were placed in shipments of Indian cashmere carpets destined for England as protection against moth damage. Ultimately, cashmere shawls became known for their distinctive scent.

Growing conditions

Patchouli is a robust upright shrub that can grow to a height of 90cm. It prefers just the right amount of water - not too wet and not too dry! It is a relatively fast-growing plant from seed or cuttings, and prefers rich soil and full sun (some shade). After flowering, tiny brown seeds will appear. It is better to plant young seedlings in the shade so that they can grow stronger. In very cold climates, the plant will need to be kept in a greenhouse or warm, protected area, also during the winter. If this is not done, it will die and new seeds or seedlings will be needed for annual planting. Plants should be uprooted if they become patchy in a shaded area of the garden. Uses of patchouli for medicinal purposes

Patchouli is used for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties in the treatment of minor skin conditions such as acne, and it also soothes dry or chapped skin when used as a foot bath. Its reputation as a skin regenerator and healing agent is well known, and it can help prevent the formation of scars on wounds.

Has a pleasant smell for people and a killer smell for insects

In addition, it has antifungal properties, and has a deodorizing function, and can also be used to treat insect bites. Patchouli also has a diuretic effect and can help with water retention and break up cellulite. Some people use the leaves to create an infusion and drink it to relieve menstrual cramps. Patchouli is also valued for its antidepressant and mood-elevating properties, due to its active components stimulating the pituitary gland, which allows the release of endorphins. Placing crushed leaves in a warm bath will benefit both the body and mind.

Other uses

Patchouli has many uses as an aromatic oil for well-being and as an ingredient in perfume. You can dry the leaves yourself and then use them in a potpourri - boil a few leaves in a pan to scent the air in your home.

The plant has traditional uses as a shampoo when the leaves are ground with goo (entada) and lemongrass.

Crushed leaves and plant tops can act as an insecticide and help get rid of cockroaches, moths and even leeches. Young leaves will have the strongest flavor and become a more concentrated oil.

Patchouli oil, with its distinctive musky, sweet, spicy aroma, is widely used as a base note and anchoring ingredient in modern perfumery. In fact, you will be surprised to know that some of the well-known and much-loved fragrances today contain patchouli as a base note.

A little geography: The homeland of patchouli is the Philippine Islands. Grown in the tropical zone on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Reunion, Singapore, Seychelles and the Philippines.

A little history: Long ago, traders added patchouli to bales of luxurious Indian pashminas (the traditional name for the finest grade of special woolen fabric), not for the sake of a pleasant aroma, but to prevent insects from spoiling the goods. The persistent resinous smell of patchouli, which moths could not stand, fell in love with wealthy ladies and became their calling card... The modern world has stopped using patchouli as a means of repelling insects, moreover, it actively uses the aroma of this plant for seduction), and not only... .

Patchouli essential oil, extracted by steam distillation of fresh or slightly dried raw materials (the main components of the oil are patchoulol (patchouli alcohol) and various sesquiterpenes) has an incredibly wide range of applications:

Patchouli essential oil has bactericidal properties. In dermatology it is recommended for eczema, fungal infections, acne, tinea pedis, dermatitis, etc.;
- widely used in cosmetology (especially for refreshing dry skin) and medicine;
- oil stimulates the nervous system, activates mental and emotional processes;
- a powerful erotic stimulant. Eliminates sexual coldness and impotence, helps with depression; (do not rub or drink; how to use, read below...)

And of course, perhaps the widest use of patchouli is found in perfumery; it adds incredible volume to the aroma. Most often used in middle and base notes.

Patchouli is a famous scent aphrodisiac. In India, women brew patchouli leaves as tea or use it as a seasoning to help restore sexual power. According to my observations, Russian women have come up with their own way of restoring this same strength: patchouli for themselves, for a man - 50 grams. cognac (recipe approximate).
Patchouli essential oil has a pronounced eroticizing effect. The unusual aroma of patchouli excites, intrigues and teases, beckons deeper and deeper. This essential oil acts on a subconscious level and if you want to spend an unforgettable night with your soulmate, two hours before his arrival, light an aroma lamp with a few drops of patchouli essential oil added, or use a regular wax candle as soon as the wax begins to melt, add a couple of drops of patchouli to it without touching the wick...

So, I got distracted, we are talking about perfumes...
Dressy ladies and young girls of the Napoleonic era covered their shoulders with chic Indian shawls on cool evenings, which became fashionable at that time and were a sign of good taste. Interest in everything exotic was gaining momentum, and fashionistas were not deterred even by the specific smell of patchouli that permeated all Indian cashmere products. The woody-resinous smell of patchouli became associated with charm and luxury, and French perfumers had no choice but to release perfumes with the scent of patchouli.
In the 19th century, patchouli-scented perfumes lost their magnetic influence, and the oriental exoticism was replaced by the practical and businesslike West. The time has come for all kinds of technical innovations, production processes have reached a completely different level, and the sweetish, exotic patchouli perfumes have become covered with the bourgeois touch of an old grandmother’s chest. However, it was impossible to allow patchouli perfume with its time-tested aroma to ingloriously sink into oblivion. Extravagant Elsa Schiaparelli, designer of fashionable women's clothing, could not ignore the tempting smell. Accustomed to shocking the public, thinking in images of surrealism, Madame Schiaparelli created the amazing, original Shocking perfume in 1937, returning patchouli-scented perfumes to the bohemian French environment.
Then there were the liberated 60s. and hippies with their flower philosophy. The era of “flower power” - as the freedom-loving 60s were called in the West - smelled special: the light haze of marijuana was mixed with the spirit of sandalwood, jasmine and, of course, patchouli... The revived interest in Eastern culture automatically returned interest in woody and floral scents.

There are many fragrances, one of the ingredients of which is patchouli, as an addition to the completed composition, and there are perfumes where patchouli is the main component. I'll name a few:

Purple Patchouli - Tom Ford– one of my favorite scents. Bright, harmonious sound of patchouli, amber, vetiver

White Patchouli - Tom Ford– combines the aroma of patchouli and notes of sensual white peony. Rose and jasmine give the perfume a flair of bohemian chic.

Patchouli Patch - L"Artisan Parfumeur– Veil patchouli, that’s how the name of these unusual perfumes is translated. Patchouli is in both the top and middle notes. Oriental notes of musk and anise coexist perfectly with the warm scent of patchouli.

Patchouli Empire CB I Hate Perfume– spicy, woody aroma, pepper adds a refined bitterness to the deep aroma of patchouli mixed with woody notes.

What is your favorite patchouli scent?

Patchouli essential oil has long been believed to attract wealth, peace, fertility, business success and stability. Many ancient magic books describe a recipe for “quick money.” Read further: properties of patchouli and magical recipes.

It is used to lubricate a wallet, and its aroma is spread throughout the house, used as a useful cosmetic product and added to perfume to attract the attention of the opposite sex. The amazing properties of patchouli are often compared to good wine. Its aroma reveals itself over time and becomes more valuable every year.

Properties of patchouli

Patchouli oil belongs to the solar group of essential oils. A few drops of saturated oil can bring great benefits to the body and put you in a working mood. Due to the fact that patchouli oil has a very strong effect, when using it, you must strictly adhere to the dosage and try not to use it during pregnancy.

Smell

Patchouli essential oil has a spicy aroma. People notice its similarity to the smell of smoke from a fire and the aroma of earth. The persistence of the odor causes the treated areas to smell with a bitter-tart aroma for almost two weeks.

Compound

The beneficial properties of patchouli are due to the content of a unique substance in it - patchoulol. It is this that gives the plant its characteristic aroma. Patchouli essential oil is produced by distilling the leaves of the medicinal shrub and releasing steam. Its quality depends mainly on the concentration of patchoulol. It is also influenced by the content of other beneficial substances, such as belnesen, alpha-guayan and alpha-patchoulene.

Raising money

Many legends have already been created around the miraculous energy of patchouli, forcing people to oil their wallets and keep them close to them. The magical properties of such an amulet can be explained through logical thinking.

The properties of patchouli include the ability to reduce appetite, which promotes weight loss and, accordingly, gives a person confidence in their abilities. Thanks to the oil, hidden abilities and talents are revealed. Perhaps this is why patchouli oil is considered a good way to attract money.

Application

Patchouli oil has the most effective effect on the psycho-emotional sphere. It perfectly calms the nervous system, relieves anxiety and prevents depression. The ability to influence a person’s mood determines its widespread use in aromatherapy. However, not only the aroma of the oil is beneficial. It is actively used in cosmetology and medicine.

Cosmetology

Patchouli essential oil can improve skin elasticity, relieve excessive dryness and suppress inflammation. This feature allows the oil to be introduced into the formulation of modern skin care products for the face, head and body, raising developments in cosmetology to a new level. Shampoos and creams enriched with patchoulol are suitable for any skin type: they moisturize dry skin, normalize sebum production in oily skin and soothe irritations on sensitive skin.

Patchouli oil for the face can produce a lifting effect, accelerating the process of skin regeneration. By using patchouli oil on your hair, you can easily get rid of dandruff. And by constantly adding a couple of drops of oil to your body products, you can forget about cellulite. A massage with patchouli oil on an area of the body such as the chest will also be useful. The ability to eliminate the harmful effects of fungus allows the oil to find use in gels for intimate hygiene.

Medicine

Patchouli is also widely used in medicine. In Asian countries it was previously used quite often. They used it to treat wounds after insect bites, heal scratches and eliminate herpetic rashes. Today, patchouli is used for inflammatory processes in the urinary tract, digestive system disorders and hemorrhoids.

But the main use of patchouli oil is to maintain optimal functioning of the nervous system, because it can reduce stress levels, relax and calm. To do this, it is enough to simply inhale its vapors. In its pure form, the oil can be used to eliminate pimples, scars, acne and old skin problems.

Fragrances

Another area of application for patchouli is perfumery. The tart aroma of patchouli gained popularity during the reign of Bonaparte, when not a single lady attended social events without a drop of aromatic oil. During hippie times, patchouli scents were a silent slogan for peace and love, and for good reason, because the scent of patchouli stimulates attraction to a partner.

Today, the scent of patchouli is most often used in men's perfumes. However, manufacturers do not deny women its astringency and add a slight bitterness to women's perfumes. In addition to perfumery, the aroma of patchouli is used for household purposes. For example, to repel moths and other pests.

Home use

At home, patchouli oil can be used for aromatherapy (8-10 drops diluted in aroma lamp water are enough for 20 sq.m), enrichment of body and face creams (2 drops) and spot compresses for inflammatory processes (3 drops per 10 ml of base oils).
