Theater Russian ballet seasons. "Russian Seasons" by Sergei Diaghilev - the revival of Russian ballet

On July 1, when the summer off-season begins in the playbill of repertoire theaters, a unique ballet marathon, "Summer ballet seasons". This is a non-stop classic in the very center of the capital: every day for two months on stage - pearls of world ballet art accompanied by an orchestra.

Traditionally, the first performance of the Summer Ballet Seasons will be the main Russian ballet, Swan Lake, performed by a new project participant - the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater (SATOB). One of the largest Russian musical theaters brings 4 performances to Moscow and dances at the "Seasons" from 1 to 7 July. The chief choreographer of the ensemble is Yuri BURLAKA.

On July 1 and 2, viewers have a unique opportunity to see Swan Lake in the version of the Bolshoi Theater performance of 1901-1922 (duration 3 hours 15 minutes). The choreography edition of Alexander Gorsky was created by the chief ballet master of SATOB Yuri Burlaka.

On July 4 and 5, the Samara ballet troupe will present The Sleeping Beauty directed by Gabriela Komleva, laureate of the Golden Mask National Theater Award.

On July 6 and 7, the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theater will show the ballet "Esmeralda", which was nominated for the National Theater Award "Golden Mask" in 2019 for "the best work of a choreographer". The plot is based on the famous novel by V. Hugo "Cathedral Notre dame de paris". Music by the Italian composer Caesar Pugni, libretto by Jules Perrot.

This year the Seasons repertoire includes 10 famous classical ballets - Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Don Quixote, The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Romeo and Juliet - staged by the legendary choreographers Marius Petipa, Asaf Messerer, Leonid Lavrovsky, Vasily Vainonen, Alexander Gorsky.

A rare name for the capital's stage - the ballet Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to the music of Bogdan Pavlovsky - will be presented by the Art-Da Ballet Theater, a promising collective whose performances were greeted with enthusiasm by the audience in previous seasons. The troupe, which has a high creative potential in both classical and modern trends, works under the motto "Talent and devotion to the classical traditions of Russian ballet."

The ballet La Bayadere by Marius Petipa, performed by the National Classical Ballet, will again appear in the repertoire of the Summer Ballet Seasons. The young troupe, founded in 2010, tours a lot across Russia and the world, carefully preserves the traditions of Russian ballet and has already established itself as a zealous keeper of classical ballet art.

This year the soloists of the Parisian Opera Garnier (Grand Opéra) again participate in the performances of the project. Young, talented dancers of the Paris Opera, Eloise BOURDON and Jérémie Lou KER, will perform the leading roles in the ballets Giselle on 21 July and Swan Lake on 23 July.

For 18 years, the performances of the Summer Ballet Seasons have been attended by over 800,000 people. Initially, the project was conceived for foreign tourists visiting Moscow after the closing of the theater and concert season. But the residents of the capital showed no less interest in summer performances, and very soon "Seasons" became a notable event, and now a good tradition of the cultural life of summer Moscow.

The mission of the project is to preserve the rich traditions of Russian ballet - one of the most important and brightest parts of the cultural heritage of Russia. An equally important task is to familiarize the widest audience with the art of classical ballet. The organizers of the Summer Ballet Seasons are in constant search of new professional collectives and outstanding performances that preserve the continuity of generations in the art of ballet dance.

All performances are accompanied by an orchestra.

The first quarter of the 20th century was a time of innovation. Then in Europe passed with an unprecedented full house "Russian seasons"arranged by Sergei Diaghilev... The impresario was eager to expand the scope of traditional ballet, so he gathered around him talented dancers, composers and artists who together created a ballet ahead of its time. Europe has applauded Russian Seasons for 20 years.

The childhood and youth of Sergei Diaghilev were spent in Perm (Northern Urals). After the future impresario graduated from law, he realized that he wanted to devote himself to culture.

The turning point in Sergei Diaghilev's life came when he moved from Russia to Paris in 1906. He organized there an exhibition of paintings by Russian artists, a number of concerts dedicated to the work of Russian composers. But most of all he was remembered by the descendants as the organizer of the "Russian Seasons" - innovative ballet performances.

Back in 1899, being an official at special assignment under the director of the Imperial Theaters, Diaghilev saw Isadora Duncan and Mikhail Fokine perform. Diaghilev's dance innovations delighted him. He decided that traditional choreography would no longer surprise the audience, so in 1909 he opened the Season of Russian Ballets in Paris.

Anna Pavlova, Mikhail Fokin, Vaclav Nijinsky created something unique. New choreography, music by Stravinsky, Debussy, Prokofiev, Strauss have merged together. Alexandre Benois, Pablo Picasso, Coco Chanel, Henri Matisse realized their fantasies in the design of costumes and decorations.

The three earliest ballets: The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and The Rite of Spring (1913) made a splash. Although it is worth noting that the public did not immediately accept the innovation of Diaghilev and his team. At the premiere of the ballet "The Rite of Spring" the audience did not understand what was happening on the stage: they shouted so that they drowned out the orchestra. The choreographer Nijinsky had to tap the beat so that the artists could continue to dance. Nevertheless, after the “Russian Seasons”, a fashion for everything Russian appeared in Europe: foreign dancers changed their names to Russian, and the wife of King George VI walked down the aisle in a dress decorated with elements from Russian folklore.

For 20 years Europe has applauded Russian Seasons. Despite the fact that Sergei Diaghilev was a welcome guest in the most famous aristocratic houses in Europe, this man teetered on the brink of ruin all his life. Diaghilev suffered from diabetes for a long time, but did not follow the prescribed diet. In 1929, his health deteriorated sharply, while in Venice, he fell into a coma, from which he never left.
After the collapse of "Russian Seasons" continued to excite the public for more than one decade.

Forerunner "Russian seasons" was an exhibition of Russian artists in the Paris Autumn Salon, brought by Diaghilev in 1906. This was the first step in a 20-year journey of powerful and graceful propaganda of Russian art in Europe. In a few years, famous European ballerinas will take Russian pseudonyms just to dance in "Russian seasons" Sergei Diagiev.

Further, in 1907, with the support of the imperial court of Russia and influential persons of France, Sergei Diaghilev organized five symphony concerts of Russian music at the Parisian Grand Opera - the so-called "Historical Russian concerts", where N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov, S.V. Rachmaninov, A.K. Glazunov and others, and also sung by Fyodor Chaliapin.

In 1908, as part of "Russian seasons" for the first time the Russian opera "Boris Godunov" was presented to the Parisian public. But despite its success, this art genre is "Russian seasons" was present only until 1914. Assessing the preferences of the public, the sensitive entrepreneur Sergei Diaghilev came to the conclusion that it was more cost-effective to stage a ballet, although he personally regarded ballet with disdain due to the lack of an intellectual component in it.

In 1909, Sergei Diaghilev begins preparations for the next "Russian season", going to focus on the performance of Russian ballet. The artists A. Benois and L. Bakst, the composer N. Cherepnin and others helped him in this. Diaghilev and his team strove to achieve harmony of artistic design and execution. By the way, the ballet troupe consisted of the leading dancers of the Bolshoi (Moscow) and Mariinsky (Petersburg) theaters: Mikhail Fokin, Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Ida Rubinstein, Matilda Kshesinskaya, Vaslav Nijinsky and others. But preparations for the first ballet seasons were nearly disrupted by the spontaneous refusal of the Russian government to support "Russian seasons" financially. The situation was saved by Diaghilev's influential friends, having collected the required amount. Subsequently "Russian seasons" will exist precisely thanks to the support of the patrons whom Sergei Diaghilev found.

Debut "Russian seasons" in 1909, it consisted of five ballets: Pavilion of Artemis, Polovtsian Dances, Feast, Sylphide and Cleopatra. And it was a pure triumph! They had success with the public as dancers - Nijinsky. Karsavin and Pavlov, as well as exquisite costumes by Bakst, Benoit and Roerich, and music by Mussorgsky, Glinka, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and other composers.

Preparing for "Russian seasons" 1911 takes place in Monte Carlo, where performances will take place, including 5 new ballets by Fokine ("The Underwater Kingdom"), "Narcissus", "The Phantom of the Rose", "Petrushka" (to the music of Igor Stravinsky, who also became the discovery of Diaghilev). Also in this "Season" Diaghilev staged Swan Lake in London. All ballets were successful .

Due to Diaghilev's pioneering experiments "Russian seasons" 1912 was received negatively by the Parisian public. Especially resonant was the ballet "Afternoon of a Faun" staged by V. Nijinsky, his audience booed for "disgusting movements of erotic animality and gestures of grave shamelessness." Diaghilev's ballets were received more favorably in London, Vienna, Budapest and Berlin.

1913 was marked for "Russian seasons" the formation of a permanent ballet troupe called "Russian ballet", which, however, was left by M. Fokin, and later by V. Nijinsky .

In 1914, the young dancer Leonid Myasin became Diaghilev's new favorite. To work in "Russian seasons" Fokine returns. A Russian avant-garde artist takes part in the preparation of the scenery for the ballet The Golden Cockerel, and the Golden Cockerel becomes the most successful ballet of the season, as a result of which Goncharova has been involved in the creation of new ballets more than once .

During World War I "Russian seasons" Diaghilev's are with varying success, touring Europe, the United States and even South America. Many choreographic and musical innovations of its choreographers and composers scare the audience away, but it happens that the viewer perceives the same performance much better several years after the premiere.

In this way "Russian seasons" exist until 1929. At various times, artists such as André Derain, Picasso, Henri Matisse, Juan Miro, Max Ernst and other artists, composers Jean Cocteau, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Igor Stravinsky, dancers Serge Lifar, Anton Dolin and Olga Spesivtseva have worked on their implementation. ... And even Coco Chanel created costumes for the Apollo Musaget ballet, where Serge Lifar was the soloist.

Since it was Sergei Diaghilev who was the driving force "Russian seasons", then after his death in August 1929 the troupe "Russian ballet" disintegrates. True, Leonid Myasin creates the Russian Ballet in Monte Carlo, a troupe that continues the traditions of Diaghilev. Serge Lifar remains in France, performs as a soloist in the Grand Opera, which makes an extraordinary contribution to the development of French ballet. .

Over the 20 years of hard work "Russian Seasons" and personally Diaghilev, the traditional attitude of society to the art of theater and dance has changed dramatically, and russian art became extremely popular in Europe and throughout the Western world, influencing the artistic process of the 20th century in general.
