Samples of the task of speaking the exam English. Speaking USE: task C6 (44)

Hello dear readers!

Today I want to show you one lifehack (lifehack) which you can use in preparation for Oral part (Task 3). I think it will make your life much easier while preparing for the exam. But first, let's define what this buzzword means. life hack ”.

Reference :

“Lifehack is a strategy or technique adopted in order to manage one’s time and daily activities in a more effective way.”

Source: Oxford English Dictionary

Life hack (literally "life hack" ) is a set of techniques and techniques to simplify the process of achieving your goals with the help of various useful tips and tricky tricks.

I promise it won't hurt to break. You will surely like it!

So, let's take as a basis my sample answer to Task 3 Oral part of Demo 2017 presented on the FIPI website.

Using homework, you can easily build your monologue on the exam.

See what I got in my new video.

Before we start our task, I want to remind you that in the exam you have to choose a photo for description in just a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, you will not be able to make any notes. In addition, the response time is limited to 2 minutes, so the pace of speech should be quite high.

How to choose the right photo

- choose a photo where objects are clearly distinguishable and do not cause double interpretation

- choose photos that depict people (or a group of people), as you will be able to describe their emotional state, appearance, occupation, in contrast to static pictures with images of architectural monuments

- if you choose a photo of people, do not waste time on the exam, coming up with names for them. Call them by the names of your friends, relatives, acquaintances.

For example, In the foreground of the picture you can see my sister Ann (my brother Andrew, my aunt Mary, etc.).

Use your life experience to describe the scene. This will give you confidence in the exam.

For example, I took this picture last summer when my family went to Sochi on holiday.

- choosing a photo, in no case don't change your mind because you just won't have enough time to write a good answer!

- do not choose a photo that you just like; be guided by the amount of your knowledge that you need to use when describing a photograph.

Read about what clichés to use to describe photos.

Well, now I will show you how you can use my template to describe photos of various subjects by changing a few phrases.

Task 3These are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to describe to your friend.

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

  • where and when the photo was taken
  • what/who is in the photo
  • what is happening
  • why do you keep the photo in your album
  • why did you decide to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: “I’ve chosen photo number …”

Task 3

sample answer

well, recently I have started a blog about a healthy lifestyle. I write short stories about healthy food. Also, I often take pictures of my friends and relatives to show to my followers (readers) which exercises they do to keep fit. (3)

So, this picture was taken a week ago when my sister and I went jogging in our park near the river. (1)

In the foreground of the photo you can see my elder sister Stacy. She is running in the park at the moment. The morning is sunny and quite warm, so Stacy is wearing a nice T-shirt. She looks pretty slim because she does her regular exercises and maintains a balanced diet. She says it always helps her to be in a good mood and shape. (5)

in the background of the picture there are lots of green trees. The air is usually fresh in the morning. And I think it's the best time for doing sports. (3)

I know that you are trying to lose some weight. So, I show you the photo of my sister to encourage you to take up jogging. Also, to gain the best results, you can follow her eating habits advice. (3)

Are you taking the exam in English? So, you need to master such a difficult section as speaking, or the oral part. These are tasks C3, C4, C5 and C6 in the USE version. Most of the mistakes graduates make in these tasks.

We have prepared for you two real USE tests in English and samples of these tests. Each of them has 4 tasks. On this page - Test 1

Task C3 - reading.

HTML5 audio not supported

Task 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

Many lands that had once been swamps were drained or filled in. There are different reasons why people drained swamplands. Some were drained to fight diseases caused by insects that lived in them. Because swamps were considered unpleasant places in which to live and harmful to health, many people thought that unless they were drained the land was worthless.

Other swamps were drained to make new land. As the population grew and more land was needed, people drained swamps or filled them to make room for more farms and factories, more roads and airports.

Few people thought that it might be harmful to get rid of swamps. As swamps disappeared, other things happened. There were both more floods and more droughts than before. There were also more fires, for swamps had acted as firebreaks. Hunters noticed that there was less wild game. Wild life that once lived in the swamps was dying out, because it had no place to live.

Task C4 - make up questions.

Task 2. Study the advertisement.
You are going to visit Japan this summer and you’d like to have more information about the flights to Japan. In 1.5 minutes you are to ask five questions to find out the following:

1) departure dates
2) travel time
3) return ticket price
4) discounts for students
5) buying the ticket online
You have 20 seconds to ask each question.

HTML5 audio not supported

Task execution example:
1. What are the days of departures? (What are departure dates?)
2. How long will it take to travel?
3. How much does the return ticket cost? (What is the price of the return ticket?,
How much is the return ticket?
4. Do you offer any discounts for students? (Are there any discounts for students available?)
5. Is it possible to book the ticket online?

Task C5 - description of one picture.

Task 3. Imagine that you are showing pictures of your pets to your friend. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously. In your talk remember to speak about:
when you took the photo
what/who is in the photo
what is happening
Why did you take the photo
Why did you decide to show the picture to your friend
Don’t forget to start with “I have chosen photo number….”

An example of a completed task C5:

I have chosen photo number 1.
To begin with, people keep pets for different reasons. They make our lives more exciting and become the members of our family. They can also be our closest friends forever.

I took this photo last summer in our country house. We have got several pets and this dog is among them. All our pets are friendly and cute creatures.
Let me tell you a few words about this photo. In the background you can see a wonderful Russian landscape. In the foreground there is a wonderful lawn framed with lovely birches and bushes. In the center you can see my elder sister Sveta and our dog Snowflake. We called him so because he is as white and fluffy as snow.
The weather is fine, sunny and warm. Snowflake likes to go for a walk very much. In the photo Sveta is telling him something to keep him calm. You can't see me as I am taking the photo.
Taking this photo I wanted to start a collection of our pets' pictures and to display it on the wall in our living room. Besides, the photos will always remind us of our pets.
I decided to show this picture to you because you told me a lot about your dog. Now it's my turn to give you the first impression of my pet. Isn't he friendly and cute?
I believe when you come to our place , Snowflake will accept you as his best friend.
That is all I wanted to tell you about this photo.

Task C6 - comparison and comparison of two photographs.

Task 4. Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:
give a brief description (action, location)
say what the pictures have in common
say in what way the pictures are different
say which kind of life you'd prefer
explain why

You will speak for no more than 2 minutes. You have to talk continuously.

Example of completed task C6:

In our modern world some jobs are very important for our society.
Here are two pictures to compare and contrast on the topic. This is a photo of a man doing his job outside and that is a photo of a policeman standing on the side of the road.
These two pictures show jobs and this is the first similarity. The people in both pictures are wearing uniforms , and that is also what these pictures have in common. The weather is rather warm.
However, pictures are somehow different. The main difference is that in picture one we can see a worker , while in picture two there is a traffic policeman. Also, their actions are different: the worker is paving a sidewalk and the policeman is on duty watching the traffic on the road.
As far as I am concerned, the job of a traffic policeman (cop) is more important for the society because people of this profession are responsible for our safety and order on the roads. Besides, they control all drivers to keep and obey traffic rules. It is very important for all drivers and passengers' lives.
I've come to the end of my speaking. Thank you for listening.

The oral part is held on a separate day in a computerized form, without the participation of an interlocutor examiner, based on special software. The tasks are presented to the examinee on the computer display, the computer program contains the exact timing of the time for preparation and for the answer. Audio recordings of the answers of the examinees are provided for evaluation by experts who have undergone special training.

In 2017, the wording of task 3 was amended. Pay attention to this when using trainers 1-9, as they were created earlier and remain the same! Now the speaker is not necessarily the author of the picture, he can even say that he himself is depicted in the photo. Now the first point of the plan suggests that the student must say not only WHEN, but also WHERE the picture was taken. Word present changed to describe and the word is gone imagine.

Hello colleagues!

Today the post is for you and for those who are preparing their students for the exam in the oral part, namely, task C5 (description of the picture) or No. 3 (I just can’t get used to the new designation). In principle, now the OGE has also introduced innovations in the oral part and this material will also be useful in preparing for it.

In this article I want to tell you how I prepare my students for this task, what phrases we use.

I understand that every teacher (tutor) prepares in his own way, so I just share how I do it.

The demo version of the Unified State Examination Speaking 2016 showed that there are slight changes in the wording of the task, namely today we will consider task No. 3 (image description)

Task 3. Imagine that these are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to present to your friend.
You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

Where and when the photo was taken
what/who is in the photo
what is happening
why do you keep the photo in your album
why did you decide to show the picture to your friend

As you can see, there is an additional question where? in the first paragraph and the 4th paragraph has changed in wording. Of course, this does not change the weather, but still students need to be introduced to this, especially if you have already prepared according to the old models.

So, I give students the following template, which they can use as is or add something of their own, but still stick to this plan.

Start
I’ve chosen photo number … (be sure to start with this phrase!)

Introduction

As you know I like taking photos. It is my hobby and I can "t miss an opportunity to make a photo of an interesting event. Now I want to show you one of my best photos.
Answering the question where and when the photo was taken
I took this photo during my holidays (travelling, two years ago) when I was in …. (any city or country)
Answering the question what/who is in the photo and what is happening (4-5 sentences)
In the foreground of the picture you can see… (who we see and what they do)
You can't see me because I'm taking the photo.
They are very happy because at last their dream came true (if we see happy faces in the photo)
In the background of the picture you can see… (You can also use the there is/are… construction)
Answering the question why do you keep the photo in your album
I keep this photo in my album because looking at this photo makes me go back in that time. Moreover, I used this photo for my school project (the name of the project depending on the topic, for example, My family, My travelling, My hobby, and so on)
Answering the question why you decided to show the picture to your friend
I decided to show this photo to you because it carries pleasant memories.
That's all I wanted to say. (End your answer with this phrase)

For very weak students, I suggest learning this pattern and choosing a picture that shows several people, for example, a happy family or a man with a woman or something like that. It is very likely that there will be such a picture out of three.

This option is suitable for those children who do not get along very well with the oral part or you see that you do not have time to prepare the student more thoroughly.

Below I give you an example of one of the descriptions of the picture, taking into account my template. The basis of the text is taken

I"ve chosen photo number 1.

As you know I like taking photos. It is my hobby and I can "t miss an opportunity to take a photo of an interesting event. Now I want to show you one of my best photos.
I took this photo two months ago when my parents and I went to Moscow to visit my elder brother’s family. Recently they have moved into a new flat and invited us to a house-warming party. This was one of the most exciting moments in my life.
In the foreground of the picture you can see my brother Maxim, his wife Julia and their daughter Anna. You can't see me because I'm taking the photo. They are sitting on a comfortable white sofa in the living room. They are very happy because at last their dream came true.
In the background of the picture there is a white bookcase with open shelves. I like their decision to furnish the room in white color because it makes the room look wider. As my brother works as a journalist for a local newspaper you can see a lot of books and magazines on the shelves.
I keep this photo in my album because looking at this photo makes me go back in that time. I used this photo for my school project called “My Family Tree”.
I decided to show this photo to you because it carries pleasant memories.
That's all I wanted to say.

The book of M.A. helps me in preparing my students for the oral part. Bodoni “Preparation for the Unified State Examination: oral part. Tasks for the new demo for 2015.

It seems to me that every teacher should get acquainted with it, it contains very interesting tips, rules and the author's methodology for developing and activating oral speech skills.

In general, you do not need to worry about the description of the pictures. Here, the main thing is training! Having described a dozen pictures, I think our children will behave much more confidently!

In the USE in English, task 2 asks you to read the advertisement and ask five direct questions based on the keywords and the proposed advertisement.

The task format is a conditional questioning dialogue.
Preparation time - 1.5 minutes.
Time to complete the task - 1 minute
The maximum score is 5 points.

On the computer screen, each of the five items of the task will appear in turn. You will only have 20 seconds to complete one question.

Criteria for assessing task 2 on the exam

The maximum number of points that can be obtained in task 2 is 5 points. Thus, if the task is asked to voice 5 questions, then each question is evaluated at 1 point.

Note!
The time allotted for each question is enough to have time to correct the error. That is, if the examinee asked a question and realized that he made a mistake, then he can have time to ask the same question correctly in the allotted time. Do not forget, only one question is evaluated - the last one asked.

Typical mistakes in the English exam in task 2 (USE)

  • use mainly general and special questions;
  • use the simple present and simple future tenses of the active and passive voice;
  • in this task, the most important thing is to ask the question correctly, there is no need to invent something and remember complex vocabulary.
  • observe intonation: a general question is pronounced with an ascending intonation, and a special one with a descending intonation.
  • ask indirect questions;
  • ask multiple questions about the same item:
  • do not forget the scheme of each type of question (do not confuse auxiliary questions, word order, etc., etc.)

Types of questions in English

The ability to ask questions is important when learning English. Accordingly, in order to complete this task for the highest score, the examinee must know all types of questions in the English language.

Note!
It is not recommended to ask a question starting with the words "Could you tell me ...", since by mistake you can ask not a question, but make a request. For example,
Could you tell me the price? is a request (mistake!)
Could you tell me how many

Reminder!
Don't forget about intonation in interrogative sentences. The intonation should rise in a general question and fall in a special one.

Cliche for successful completion of task 2 in the oral part of the exam in English

We offer several tables of the most frequently asked questions (clichés and question templates on various topics). For yourself, you can choose the option that is most convenient for learning.
